Always a curmudgeon but a winner - and not just with the national team.
He’d probably get a state burial in Ireland. 😔
He took us to Euro 88 - with that famous win over England. And of course to Italia 90 where we drew our way to the QFs with a pressing game before the phrase was even invented. 😂 Those few summer weeks were some of the finest of many of my generation’s sporting lives. It felt like the country shook when Cascarino scuffed his penalty and O’Leary scored that penalty to beat Romania who’d, with the wonderful Hagi, battered us all game. RIP Jack.

... and should in England too.
I think he applied for the position of England manager, but didn't even get a reply. Why would he when we had men of the calibre of Graham Taylor waiting to take the job?
Clever, funny, talented - and I love it that he still pronounced Ajax ' a - jacks ' long after everyone else in Britain had learned the correct way to say it.
Can only echo much of what DD and Easily have said - certainly provided some inspiring times for both Irish and English football.
RIP Big Jack! A legend at Leeds and now united once more with his teammates Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry! MOT
Massive shame. Great sense of humour on camera and before my time - great on the pitch. He inspired a whole country as a player and another as a manager.
One of footballs true greats.
For Italia 90 the Dubliners and Pogues wrote a brilliant song called Jack's Heroes. And by brilliant I mean awful. And by awful I mean brilliant when you've had a few beers. Which I have.
Loved the fact he never carried cash. In Ireland he would always buy the first round of drinks by cheque knowing full well they would never cash them. There are pubs all over Ireland with a framed cheque on the wall from Jack.
Fantastic character, a giant of a man, God bless ye big fella.
Ironically he was a figure of fun for having a policy of qualification to represent your country that actually seems stricter than a nun compared to rugby these days! 😆
Best manager England never had. Rest up big fella.
I'm an Ashington lad, as was Jackie (and Bobby) in fact I'm typing this form the street next to Charlton Street in the town. My first contact with him was way back in 1978, me and a group of friends had formed Ashington juniors supporters club (big time or what!) a small Northern league club with avg attendance of around 80. Anyway, we wrote to Jack who at the time was the manager of Sheff Wed not expecting to hear from him. 2 weeks later we got as reply saying he would be delighted to be our honory chairman, loved the town and loved the club, and any help we needed just to contact him. It was an amazing offer from someone in the professional game to a bunch of schoolkids.
Always had my upmost respect from then.
RIP Jack
Lovely story Ian.
RIP Jack, Norman & Trevor 🙁

Leeds Greats all of them. Please Leeds, do it for them in the next two weeks, in our centenary year.
Agreed all, promotion will be the best tribute our lads can give. Sleep well Jack.
