Some eejits let them off at Glastonbury festival, one person was lucky I was by their tent when a lantern came down on it & set it alight - i had to stomp on the thing for a bit to put it out!

I'm not convinced by the idea, it's just littering, isn't it?

Littering? No more than / probably less than fireworks

And they're still **** 😆

Sky lanterns are fine if 1 or 2 people have them, when the whole country decide its a good idea to let them go you basically have an excessive incendiary attack on the countryside. Not exactly new to the UK either, my brother and I were letting them off some 20 years ago.

do you need certain weather for this? gale force wind wouldnt help much im sure, but does it need to be dead still as in not a breath of wind?

I enjoyed watching a stream of them whilst in the darkness hours of Mayhem this year.

fuel?

Here in Beijing, we write our wishes on a piece of (rice??) paper, then light that. The flame from that causes the lantern to rise, and at the same time, supposedly granting your wish as well.
When it does land somewhere, it's not on fire at all

The ones I've seen were still alight when they've fallen out of the sky prematurely!
user-removed, I see where you're going with that but sadly not... 😉
