It’s growing rapidly, doubling in size daily. What the hell is it and more importantly is it going to kill me?

Any four-leaf clovers in that?

Do you have a fairy ring? (if that's not a personal question)

Pick it early in the morning when it is still cool, slice and gently sauté in butter with just a touch of salt and black pepper and have it for breakfast.

If it does turn out to be deadly then can I have your bikes and can admin please remove this posting.

🙂

Looks like a puff ball to me. Found one once and ate it. You might want more evidence before you eat yours, but I’m not aware of other mushrooms that get that big.

It certainly fits the description in that there video. Just the one, no others about, but it’s not a big garden. I’m surprised at what we have growing in our garden TBF. I’m in town, not countryside, and we’ve a plethora of wildlife about.

My ring is my own affair, thank you very much.

What you see on the surface is only a tiny bit of what is supporting that fungal growth. I’d be worried if I were you 😉

Mycelium is amazing stuff.

I would also say it looks like a giant puffball. It is meant to be edible but I didn't think much of the one I found/ate. Your taste buds might disagree with mine though, a few of the guys in my work like them.

I'd say WCA has it bang on there, apart from adding a bit of garlic to the butter too.

They can grow to be really big, here's one from the Jura. It was about 40cm across

They need to be picked and cooked while still firm and solid, so they can be easily cut into slices and cooked in butter; a really sharp knife is a necessity. Salt and black pepper to taste. Once they start to feel even slightly ‘spongy’, let them alone to spore.

I once saw a similar pic on reddit (r/whatisthisthing) where a contactor had dug a hole, dumped his offcuts and leftovers and put soil and turf on top. When the can of expanding foam eventually rusted through...

Edit: found it.

Don't go eating things you can't identify.

Pretty sure puffballs are unique in that that don't have any super deadly doppelgangers waiting to slowly dissolve your and your dinner guests livers.

And even if they do, everyone knows to only serve the first batch to the in laws don't they?

Advice not followed by Sebastian Faulks.

Edit: wrong author should have been Nicholas Evans apparently.

Yeah, as mentioned, it's a giant puffball. They can easily get to basketball size. Something has had a good nibble on that one already but if you're keen to eat it then slice through the middle to make sure it's pure white all the way through. If it's at all yellow then I'd not bother eating. The yellowing means they're starting to produce spores which can cause tummy upset.

Personally, I'm not a big fan. Pretty bland to eat and the texture is odd. YMMV.

The other option is wait until it reaches maturity and jump on it to spread the spores far and wide, as nature intended.

We used to see those relatively often as kids roaming the Derbyshire countryside - if you wait until they're a bit more, er, mature, and hoof them like a football, they don't half knock out a lot of spores.

EDIT - wot arogers said. You could start a farm.
