I have a huge library of mp3s. Unfortunately over time I seem to have created many duplicate tracks.
Does anyone know who to remove them in OSX?
Also, the playlist function in iTunes is to simplistic and sticks to a genre, where as I like an eclectic mix of music to listen to in the car, and don't have space for my entire library on my iPod, so is there a way to make a better playlist without just making it myself?
Not sure about doubles, I tried a bit of software that did a bunch of them, but it wasn't free so in the end I sorted by artist and went through them until I got bored.
Smart Playlists "simplistic"? You can create by anything from genre to last played to length to track number - basically anything that is tagged in the file!
Theres a "show duplicates" option, without being in front of my mac I cant tell you where, look on options on file menu in itunes.
Unfortunately you have to manually go through and delete the ones you dotn want. Quite tediousif you have the same track but on different albums and want to keep both, or an mp3 and mp4 version of a track, or a remix.
I have been using the Genius playlist function, but it seems flawed.
perhaps it is a case of just spending a fair amount of time making playlists manually
I have 40GB of music files. It will take me a fair amount of time to do it manually

Yeah, I have a 160GB iPod containing less than half of my library 😉
([edit]Note- I didn't do them all in one night!)
I doff my hat at DezB. I can only dream of having a library that big
So far my iTunes Library is about 155Gb. There's still quite a lot of music I have on CD that I haven't got around to ripping, and there's other new stuff being added all the time.
When you've been buying CD's since 1982, and vinyl before that, you build up quite a collection.

Blokes say something similar to me all the time 😉

I have no words, just tears 😆

from what I can make out, the genius function works by looking at what everyone else puts in a playlist with the song you select, then comparing them with what you have in your library. I find it works quite well in generally matching similar music.
By it's very nature its not just a random song generator. There are ways of doing that through smart playlists. Try setting one to "media kind" is music, limit to 100 songs (or how many you want" and selected by random".
Itunes is a fantastic music management tool, criticised by those who don't know how to use it and who think its easier to copy and paste 40 gig of music through explorer
If you don't mind paying and have a Mac, Tangerine will produce esoteric playlists from your library. You get some strange juxtapositions with things like metal going to classical, follwoed by dance of some sort. It's all based on bpm and beat intensity analysis so be prepared to wait while it analyses the library and then pastes the values in.
Tuneup media used to do an iTunes add on that will go through the library and sort everything into much better defined genres ( will separate early/late Beatles into different genres for instance) was pretty good if a little clunky interface. It did produce much better playlists though
