I am running itunes on my W10 PC and the default location for music files is C:\Users\mount\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

I have all my music files in a partition D, so I change the media folder location to D:\Music, which it accepts, but when I close down and re-open itunes the location defaults back to C:\Users\mount\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

Any suggestions please?

I haven't used iTunes on my laptop for ages, but I remember you used to have to hold the shift key when opening the app to make the library location change stick. Takes a while for the dialog to appear while you have shift held down.

Mine is on D: but it's on a drive that isn't always connected, but it always remembers the location (just errors if the drive isn't mounted).

Windows?
On Mac you used to go into iTunes preferences and change the location of the music library (and where files are stored) there. Then new downloads and the database were stored in the new location. You had to move the old ones over there.

Maybe the default location is hidden in a registry key or some such?

Alternatively you could create a symbolic link that references your D:/ location from the target location on C:/ ? Windows then thinks it’s looking at C but is seamlessly redirected to D.

I had this, I was setting the location in preferences, but it kept going back to default..

The solution was to hold down shift while opening itunes and then select the media location.

If you can I would backup your existing library, create a new library with the method above, then open iTunes normally and set it to be organised in preferences (and any other import settings you choose) and then import everything into the new library. So that it is all fresh and organised as you want it.

I thought Apple had released Music to finally replaced iTunes on Windows this week, might want to try that rather than sorting out a depreciated app.

The Apple Music preview is Windows 11 only for some reason.
