a few years ago i used my ipod a lot. built up a music library of about 1300 songs IIRC
decided to start using it again. charged it earlier. signed in...... only 350 songs
where as my music gone ??
checked the purchased stuff in my account. only the 350 there.
anyone help please ?
Download CopyTrans Manager (free version) and connect your ipod up - should be able see all the tracks on the device and take it from there.
Just need CopyTrans Manager (orange icon) from here https://www.copytrans.net/download/
Where did the 950 that weren't purchased come from? Were they uploaded from a PC? If so do you still have the machine they were on?

That’s what I was thinking, were they sourced from ripped CD’s, or something similar. Over the years, iTunes has become part of Apple Music, so it’s possible that, if they weren’t purchased from iTunes, they don’t show up any longer.
Yeah, did it sync with a new computer that doesn't have those songs on it? That was one of the many things I hated about iTunes, had to be careful about plugging into a work/friend's computer in case it started wiping songs and transferring ones I didn't want!

It shouldn't work like that. Anything you've ever added, be it ripped/files/purchases, should still be available (I've got decades of music that was ripped or added as files still in Apple Music). Apple can/will* shove it all up in the cloud if desired so that you can access it from anywhere, and then it's possible to delete the locally stored file if you want. If you do that then it then it can appear in your library still (as a cloud based item), but won't sync to an iPod, as there is no file on the computer to transfer.
*I can't remember if that's a paid for service or not, I don't think it was at the beginning. But it then it when through being "iTunes Match", then became an Apple Music subscription I think.
Yeah Apple will upload your stuff to cloud if you pay for Apple music, otherwise they don't touch it. There's a risk with that that it all goes to the cloud and then they remove non-purchaed stuff that they haven't got a match for, so you no longer see it in your library.
I never have "sync" switched on in settings for this reason - and also you don't get to manage your music manually if you have that on.
Reason I suggested to install CopyTrans is because it takes no notice of what's in the iTunes library and will show you exactly what's on the iPod.
No reply from ton as yet, so dunno where he's got to with it.
I lost all the ripped albums from my iPod a few years ago. Think it was the iTunes/Apple Music crossover that did for it as mentioned above. Was frustrating at the time as there were tens if not hundreds on there. Don't use it at all really now so not much lost in hindsight. Did feel like a real loss at the time though.
The Apple Music and iTunes Match transition was not well managed or publicized.
songs that I’d bought and songs that I’d ripped show up in my Apple Music subscription as ‘in my library’ along with Apple Music ones I’ve added. The ripped ones are usually downloadable DRM free.
iTunes Match is still available as a subscription.
OP, do you have a back up of your original rips? Or did you keep them in iTunes only? If you have an Intel-based machine then you should be able to use pre-Sonoma Finder or Windows iTunes to resync the extra content.
iPods are great. Has anyone played with Rockbox firmware?
I ripped 100s of CDs years ago into iTunes and I've noticed over the years that tracks have gone missing. They've always stayed in the same library, but for some reason individual tracks are now missing from albums. Even more bizarrely, lots of track 7s!? No idea what's going on, but I now back up to a separate non-Apple music player too.
