Boring answer which you were expecting:

Whichever brand fits your head, then whatever model suits your wallet.

I have have an Arai shaped head and a mid-range wallet.

^^what ned says^^
You can use the SHARP database for crash test results. They don't publish how they crash them though, which kind of ruins the sciencey bit for me.

sportsbikeshop.co.uk

are good.

I have an Arai RX7-GP and a Shoei NXR for my road lids, a HJC slightly cheaper for trackdays.

Check out Biltwell.

I just bought a Gringo S. Beautifully finished helmet.

They're basic helmets but if you like an old school look, spot on.
They are DOT approved so not technically UK legal but meh...

I'll join Kayak on the hipster step as I went for a Bell Bullitt complete with bubble visor.

Excellent quality, really comfy, good visibility and UK legal. Not the quietest helmet though.

Recommendations are useless as it will come down to the fit first then what you can afford
What do you wear now and kind of bike do you ride?

I've got an HJC RPHA ST, very pleased with it so far. It comes with a pinlock insert and an internal sun visor, both essential for commuting IME.
