Nope. I just think I'd be pretty pissed off if I was at a water park and someone bought a bloody dog in.

Only on Singletrack. 🙄

It's not a "water park" with slides and swimming pools by the way. It's just some squirty fountain things at a normal park:

Pretty sad story, but nice that they gave him a 'send off'.

I don't have an issue about the dog going on the water park thing. Fair play; break the rules and go for it. If it's outside anyway, you probably get birds preening in it, foxes drinking from it and all sorts.
If it's not chlorinated or whatever to protect kid's faces from dog dribble, then someone needs to sue the council or something....

My issue (and I will probably regret posting this) is why do people now feel almost obliged to publicise this kind of thing on the internet?
Sure, it's your dog. You want him to have a nice send off and do some fun things with him. I understand that. But the cynic in me wonders how many of these people set these kind of things up, just so they can pop home and stick it on a blog/facebook to share with the world.
No one seems content with doing things and keeping it just for themselves and their friends/family.
Bah, think I'm just getting too old for 'social media'....

Contrary to popular belief it's my initials, so it's NJEE, not en-gee, could be some acronym for "happy bringer of joy", which I am, I don't need a shitty slobbering animal to bring me joy, dying or not!

The photographer posted it on her blog, which seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do. Especially as someone with an interest in dogs too.

Social media did the rest.

Amputating your dog's leg and then taking loads of photos of him frolicking before having him put down seems a rather drastic way to seek attention.

Nope. That dog can walk albeit with 3 legs but a good life.

My father rescued a dog that was ran over by a car and was left to dead, it survived but was left to die in the monsoon rain drainage. My father rescued it then nursed it back to health and looked after it for the next 8 years, cleaning dog poo and urine everyday, because the dog could not walk and was paralyzed waist down.

No it's not, it's a side-effect of growing up in a farming village and being bitten too many times by vicious barstewarding farm dogs, usually to the tune of an idiotic owner saying something inane like "Oh, don't mind him/ he's just a puppy/ he's just playing/ he'd not harm a soul"

I do not wish harm on animals, but I genuinely don't understand the sentimentality pet owners have for a walking, crapping, noisy, smelly waste of money.

Why? Surely it's no different to not liking any other thing, living or otherwise. Something that stinks, shits everywhere and periodically kills people, seems quite obvious why some folk may not like them?

No, not liking dogs is a case of ancestral memory back to the days when we built fires in cave entrances to stop the wolves stealing our children.

The title of the thread included the following warning : Warning: happy sad dog story.

Why would anyone who hates dogs want to open a thread which contains that warning ?

And why, having opened a thread which covers a subject that they are not interested in, do they then feel that they must make the effort to inform everyone that they don't like dogs ?

Clearly some people need a damn good grumble and the ability to dispense large amounts of negativity to make their lives more complete.

This is a little beauty :

Why? Surely it's no different to not liking any other thing, living or otherwise. Something that stinks, shits everywhere and periodically kills people, seems quite obvious why some folk may not like them?

And I can guarantee that despite not liking dogs njee20 will repeatedly come back to this thread.

They say that it takes all sorts to make a world but it never fails amaze me just how different from each other humans can be.

Because it's a public forum, we can read whatever we want to read and respond to whatever we want to respond to?

I understand the mentality that "anyone who disagrees with me/the majority must be called out as a troll" (thanks A_A), but that's not what I'm aiming for, I genuinely don't understand why people get so sentimental about animals, as I said earlier. I'm not saying people shouldn't get sentimental about animals, hell, it's up to them. I just don't get it.

And I like that humans are can be very different from each other. It makes things much more interesting than if we were all the same.

its not trolling but to appear on every dog thread [ when the title makes it very clear what it is about] saying you hate dogs is somewhat attentions seeking/pointless

Surely we all just [ largely] ignore threads about things we dont like /have no interest in.

I think we all realise not everyone likes all the same things without someone appearing over and over again to tell us they dont like the thread topic.

That doesn't explain why anyone who doesn't like dogs would want to open a thread which in the title refers to "happy sad dog story".

The fact that it is a public forum and that you can read whatever you want to read doesn't mean that it's obligatory to read and comment on things that don't interest you.

It all seems a little bizarre to me, this need to share with others just how negative you feel about something. And I can see that for some people that need is quite powerful. Very strange

Correct! Because, like many these things, it's as interesting to read something that you have no interest in, as it is to read something that you have lots of interest in, and now I'm becoming embroiled in the dog-lovers love-in it's all the more intriguing! Dog ownership being something that polarises so many - hence the "he's just friendly" defense as your mutt bowls over a small child/sniffs your crotch etc.

No, to summarise "I don't like dogs". However I am not in the least bit miserable, in part because I don't give a shit that an animal I never had anything to do with is dead. Actually, to that end, I'm probably among the least miserable people on this thread!

I think you get me wrong. It interests me that people get sentimental about animals, precisely because I don't feel that way myself and I'd like to understand the rationale, even if I don't wish to share it. I'm not attacking anyone else for their opinion, though apparently I'm under fire for expressing my own because I don't agree with the majority.

As far as the original story goes, it's a shame the dog died. I don't understand why the send-off was so important, and the story didn't bring me anywhere close to tears. That's not a 'negative' statement, just an "I don't understand, really". If people want to get mushy over what I view to be, as I said earlier, a smelly, noisy, waste of money, more power to them. Be as effusive as you like, but do me the honour of letting me at least express my confusion.

You don't sound like it. In fact you sound pretty angry. You need to get yourself a puppy or something to get happy and calm down.

See, I don't not understand, just wasn't moved by the story in the least. The honest answer as to why I looked is that I was intrigued, and if it had been an interesting story I'd have liked it, despite not really liking dogs. As it was, I just thought "meh, not fussed by that".

I'm not sure where the struggle is, but to understand it maybe you just need to take "dog" out of the equation.

Imagine that you are responsible for "a creature" and that creature is incredibly loyal and loves you unconditionally. It is always excited to see you, will walk by your side for hours when you are in an active mood, and curl up beside you at the fire when you are not. It's funny, intelligent, empathic and it shares your life for years, maybe decades if you're lucky, always there for you. Always.

Then one black day you have to kill it, for it's own good.

It looks at you, full of love and trust, even as the poison is administered.
Then kisses your hand as it dies.

Can you really not understand why that might be emotional?

Fair point, Junkyard. Always difficult to discern in text, but point taken.

Imagine that you are responsible for "a creature" and that creature is incredibly loyal and loves you unconditionally. It is always excited to see you, will walk by your side for hours when you are in an active mood, and curl up beside you at the fire when you are not. See, that's where you've got me. No, I can't understand the emotion in that, because I don't relate the 'creature' with the qualities you embue it with. Pet owners, it seems to me, like to project human qualities and emotions onto their pets, and I don't believe them to be true - love, loyalty, humour, empathy, even intelligence in the human sense of the term. The 'creature' is not, as far as I believe, capable of that level of emotional depth, and is acting on a basic equation: Learnt 'good' behaviour = food and comfort; Base 'bad' behaviour = a thwack across the nose with a newspaper. That's not 'love' or 'loyalty' in the human sense, just a learnt behaviour that earns the 'creature' a meal ticket.

You hand me up to that point, then it got mawkish.
Dogs ain't no kissers.

"Creature" y'see. I was trying to avoid "dog"

Is it just me who finds the betrayal of trust a little disturbing?

It's disturbing but your role is to look after them, keep them happy and free from pain. Sometimes there is only one way to do that.

Try not to think about it, and now look at that sunset.

Pet owners, it seems to me, like to project human qualities and emotions onto their pets, and I don't believe them to be true - love, loyalty, humour, empathy, even intelligence in the human sense of the term.

Non pet owners, it seems to me, like to forget that humans are animals too. Our emotions are not "special" or exclusive to our species.

Learnt 'good' behaviour = food and comfort; Base 'bad' behaviour = a thwack across the nose with a newspaper. That's not 'love' or 'loyalty' in the human sense, just a learnt behaviour that earns the 'creature' a meal ticket.

Is that really so different to a human?
