2x£25 this month.
Just wondering what the largest amount anyone on here will admit to winning as I don't think I've seen anyone win more than a £100 prize?

£25 for me.
I was just setting it up yesterday for payment to my bank account. Not sure if that will start now, or if they'll still post a cheque.

I got 525 in one month about 8 years ago

Had a couple of 100 quid months.

Mostly it's just 25s

Good news!

From the Guardian:

The Treasury-backed institution, which has 25 million customers, had planned to reduce rates by up to 0.45 percentage points, and to cut the odds of winning a premium bonds prize from 24,500 to 1 to 26,000 to 1.

However, it said the changes, due in May, would not now be implemented to “support savers during the coronavirus pandemic” and that customers should ignore any notifications they receive.

Funnily enough, got the same.

Wouldn't normally be bothered but the fact that I'm queue number 460,000 has me mildly suspicious.

Edit: that's not true..it's it's just a random number. I'm only 2,000 in the queue 😀

Well, I've just received an email from NS&I saying I have a new secure message.

If you don't hear from me again I've won a stack load of cash and I've gone to the pub (I wish).

At 1.4% overall payout you have to wonder what the point is.

Even the tax free angle is totally negated by the existence of ISAs.

That doesn't even cover inflation!

Even putting it all in gilts/bonds and you're ahead. Or more sensibly, go for a 60/40 asset allocation allocation for the conservative investor. As long as you have a 5 year timeline you'll be fairly certain of being way way ahead of premium bonds.

1.4% for zero risk ? always being able to instantly realise your investment at a known value? not being exposed to illiquidity caused by market shift ?

ITs not a all eggs in one basket affair but i keep my "want access now" money in there as there isnt an ISA availible from a bank i deal with that would provide a better rate - nor would it give any chance at all of paying a million - gives you something to look forward to at the start of another month.

I suppose it takes about an hour or two for the bank transfer to come through...

I'm not sure what you mean by the second part. Stocks are always available to buy or sell.

There's not been a rolling 5 year period on record where a 60/40 split hasn't made money.

Premium bonds are simply not a good investment.

Even the dividends on an index tracker pull in more. Even after the recent slashes to them.

@hugo - You're over-thinking this PBs are not a serious investment, they are somewhere to stash money that you need instant access to. If you're lucky then you could win a prize and do significantly better than a 1.4% return, You could also win nothing.

Just think of it as doing the lottery but getting your stake back.

This. With the terrible rates available on easy access cash ISA's and relative volatility of the stock market at the moment, I've just withdrawn cash ISA to put into Premium Bonds.
I'm not maxing out my ISA allowance or Pension anytime soon so if I have ~average luck, I should earn slightly more from PBs than the Cash ISA (easy access).

The only annoying thing is, despite opening the account on the 1st, it's gonna be 2 months to the first draw.

Yes pb s v ftse yield is apples and pears. Pb s are risk free, a bit of fun and you get your money back.

Stocks and shares are long term, nice yields but the capital is not guaranteed so for the first 5 years you may be losing money. Any new money currently going into stocks should perform well, assuming no return of the virus.
