Kind of sad to think that a cyclist has become so small minded and territorial that they have to do this ...

How do you know that from the very limited, one-sided description in that paper?

Not defending what's gone on there as I was not present, but I know a few "pensioners in their 70's" who are utter arsewipes and would mouth off and give you a slap if you looked at them funny.

You read these articles and in your mind you conjure up a frail old man, not always the case.

Are you saying the media may be biased against cyclists?

Seriously, you’re going to side with sone jackass with an overwhelming sense of entitlement? Several people were assaulted by someone who happened to be riding a bike-shaped object, quite reasonably described as scum on a bike, and you’re saying it’s a one-sided report? I see people riding bikes in a stupidly reckless fashion every day, and been confronted in the past when I’ve pointed out they’re riding on a footpath, not the road next to it, are you going to say my experience is ‘one-sided’?

I don't know any cyclists (as opposed to folk riding a bike) who ride with "a mask covering his face and a hoodie jacket over his head." Limited description in that article yes, but a fair assumption. Definitely scum-like behaviour.

May I also add 'people that use commas incorrectly' to the master list of 'bad people'?

We seem to be quite good at calling all scum driving cars as "drivers", not sure we can get the hump when scum on a bike are called "cyclists".

While I accept that sections of the press do seem to be biased against cyclists, we really are very precious at times.

I do try not to but probably do subconsciously. Perhaps I should revert to calling everyone c**ts equally!

Re-read the story, OP.
If it's not total BS, it is pretty close to it.
After that, I'd give the Worthing Herald a miss. I know budgets are tight in local journalism these days but that is the most badly written, non-sensical piece of 'journalism' I've ever had the misfortune to read!

Sounds like an old knob on foot met a younger greater knob on a bike with predictable consequences.

How do you know the bike rider wasn't a pensioner too?

At the risk of wild conjecture and speculation with a side order of stereotyping,

I find it hard to believe that even the most nutty of nutcases would shout at a pensioner that he was on a cycle path, get told "no I'm not" and react by getting off the bike to give him a kicking.

On the other hand, miserable old curmudgeon yelling "bloody kids on bikes ruining our nice walk, where's your bell, you don't even have a helmet" but unfortunately picks the wrong nutty nutter to do it to, nutter thinks "I'm sick of this shit" and then gets off the bike to give him a kicking, that sounds a lot more plausible.

Not that this in any way excuses it, it's disgusting behaviour. I'm just sceptical that it played out exactly as reported.

Unlike you, it seems, I can read. Unless you are a pensioner, in which case I apologise for my rudeness.

ps. of all the opinions available about this story, that's really the best you could come up with?

That article reads like it’s main goal isn’t telling the public what happened, there’s probably elements of truth in there but the picture it paints could easily be a load of old click bait bllx.

It seems like their “facts” and not the “facts”.

It's the local Worthing rag, so hardly likely to be at the cutting edge of journalism like the STW favourite 100% Guardian.

That said , I am absolutely stunned by some of the justifications above that the pensioner must have been asking for it. Go and have a word with yourselves.

i would like to know exactly which part of the promenade this was on, as the shared section is massively wide, so even when busy, assuming you are not doing a TT, there is plenty of room for everyone.

When it does get narrower, there are two clearly marked lanes, one for bikes, one for pedestrians. I always cruise at a sensible speed along there, as there are always people walking in the cycle lane, or crossing it to get to the beach, without a care in the world.

And whilst i dont condone beating anyone up, let alone a pensioner, it does sound like there was more to the story.

I also cant fathom how the 'cyclist', pensioner and a member of the public all hit the deck, yet the 'cyclist' still had the ability to stamp on the pensioners head?!!? (unless i misread the article).

But anywho.... its dangerous out there folks, stay safe!

I'm not siding with anyone. I'm saying that I wouldn't put too much value in the accuracy of any article in a local newspaper.

I see people riding bikes in a stupidly reckless fashion every day, and been confronted in the past when I’ve pointed out they’re riding on a footpath, not the road next to it, are you going to say my experience is ‘one-sided’?

Your experience has nothing to do with this thread, unless you were one of the people written about in the article. Were you? Actually, cancel that, maybe your experience has everything to do with how you are reading and understanding that article.

Possibly you were if you spout stuff like this in real life? (I'll bet you've been storing that up for ages, haven't you? 😀 )
