...especially your mates who work for Murdoch. Though maybe not rioters nicking bottles of water

Rebekah Brooks is set to return to her job as News Corp UK chief on Monday

Obviously she was innocent, and is completely absolved of even a hint of association with hacking the phones of murdered teenagers, or anything frightful like that

So in no way could this be considered a massively insensitive **** off to everyone, and just the continuation of business as usual at Murdoch Towers

I'm totally not surprised in the slightest. She's quite clearly good at her job and keen, has experience and support of the PM.

Considering that Corporate charges against News Corp are still being considered in both UK and US it's quite a brave move...

Mind you they also employed Kelvin Mackenzie whilst the Hillsborough inquiry was going on so they're not great at sensitivity...

I don't understand - did Cameron appoint her? If not, why is it his fault? Obviously EVERYTHING is the tories fault, but why this time?

Oh, ok, I suppose technically you didn't. I thought that was the insinuation hence the title referencing Dave, and the further comment from Bikebouy about continued support from the PM.

Sorry, I'll not comment further.

Dave famously said, when giving a job to fellow [s]bent phonehacking bastard[/s] News Corp staffer Andy Coulson, that everyone deserves a second chance. Its just nice to see that such altruistic wishes, which the present Tory party is rightly renowned for, are applied across the board.

Sort of warms your heart, and restores your faith in humanity, doesn't it?

I think binners has a point TBH.

I'm now wondering what daves press office will make of this. I suspect they all knew about 7months ago and were briefed well in advance, you know, just in case.

I think, not that they nor anyones cares, it's proper bad form.

Perhaps Dave and Sam will have her round for a Kitchen Supper in Chipping Norton to celebrate? With her being a close friend, and proved innocent beyond doubt?

Can't see any reason why not

Everyone deserves a second chance after all, right?

Well if you're going to go straight from crack-cocaine, to non-smoking, then possibly not the best move. Try an intermediate step, how about a move to cigars? Perhaps the curved yellow ones.

Think yourself lucky. Imagine having to live with me?

She had to more than double unemployment to over 3 million to "increase public spending".
I'm not sure that increasing unemployment to over 3 million is the way to help the poor.

The thing with Brooks is, if you're going to be charitable and go with the "benefit of the doubt" thing and accept that her defence was true and she had nothing to do with hacking, and knew nothing about hacking, then she should be be completely unemployable as she's clearly completely and utterly incompetent if that much systematic criminality could take place under her management without her even getting an inkling of it. On that basis I wouldn't employ her to wipe my arse, as she wouldn't notice where the dirt was..

Well done on the smoking thing binners, keep up the good work..

That sounds like Socialist nonsense to me. It is common sense that the best way to help the poor is to starve them, as that will motivate them to better themselves.

It wasn't phone hacking though was it. It was voicemail interception. Annoys me that one. It wasn't right, but then neither is the over used 'phone hacking' term.

Phone hacking is the practice of intercepting telephone calls or voicemail messages, often by accessing the voicemail messages of a mobile phone without the consent of the phone's owner. The term came to prominence during the News International phone hacking scandal, in which it was alleged (and in some cases proved in court) that the British tabloid newspaper the News of the World had been involved in the interception of voicemail messages of the British Royal Family, other public figures, and the murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler

Not sure we we are blaming Dave for this - has he commented? Edlong has it though.

My tax bill has come down under the Tories, btw. Which is handy, as I earn less than the average wage putting their ill-conceived policies into action, had no payrise for most of the last 5 years, and only a slight possibility of one in the next four. ****s!

Currently about £65,000 pa. although most probably redundant soon. How much do you earn sbob?

Yes, I would pay more tax if it meant that the VAT that poorer people have to pay (and therefore a higher proportion of their income) was reduced.

Note that lowering the top level of income tax was actually a Libdem policy that the Tories hated until they saw that people liked it.

Poor you! Paying all that nasty VAT on your expensive toys. 😆

I'm currently on minimum wage.

Yes, I would pay more tax

Course you would.
All the "socialists" on here would.

If they were forced to.

Anyway, looking at the Carrera TdF from Halfords at £270 to replace my car, any opinions other than a lack of boot space?

I'm currently on minimum wage.

And by end of October I'll be on less than that. As in nothing. Poor you, earning money, you rich person having much more money than me.

So... that means I should be a right-winger! Yay! Sod the poor, kill the asylum seekers, destroy anything which doesn't give me money, me, me, me, me, me... MY MONEY!

Am I doing it right?

Anyway, looking at the 29p pasta or the 45p pasta to keep eating, any opinions other than starving?

Look for a job?

This is why I love STW and the socialist hypocrisy routinely displayed herein.
The person on £65k feels totally justified berating the person on minimum wage, which by previous threads on here does actually make me poor.
I take it you have little in the way of savings or assets then Adam?

If you're in the Cambs area I might be able to help you out with some work. 🙂

Ah the typical right-wing 'victim' whine. I hear that a lot. If I'm being right wing that is the right way to do it. Suggest you get that fireman's ladder and come off the horse, it doesn't become you.

If I have empathy with poorer people then I'm a hypocritical socialist. If I don't then I'm attacking and a hypocritical socialist. Make your mind up.

The "discussion" came about because you believe that you are better off due to a tax reduction. Yes, you may see the value of the headline figure being higher but unfortunately like all governments what they give with one hand they take away with the other, hence the VAT comment and suddenly it strangely became an issue of salaries and not the overall tax burden.

No thanks, unfortunately I'm not in your area. I'll most probably have to cut back on one of the manservants, or perhaps rent out a street or something. 🙂

PS let me know when we get to the 'had to get up before we went to bed and lick the road clean wi' tongue' part. I like that bit.

So sbob you are poor and you vote Tory, which according you proves that the Tories are right.

Well I'm sure that Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch would be very please to hear that, to stay on topic.

Do you buy the Sun sbob?

I'm not whining about my life. I'm sitting in my comfortable 16th century townhouse, looking out over the river towards the meadows and I have food in my belly.
All good.

But I am poor, by STW standards, so am meant to be one of the people that the collective would love to help.

Unfortunately I have slightly different opinions so this is not the case. I'm evil and selfish instead.

and suddenly it strangely became an issue of salaries and not the overall tax burden.

There is nothing "strange" about it.
As someone who earns quite frankly a shitload, you'll end up paying more due to VAT increases than I will.
Simply that, so don't accuse me of moving the goalposts.

UKIP maybe?

Anyway back on topic......I haven't followed this story very closely but while Rebekah Brooks was cleared of personal involvement hasn't it been firmly established that under her watch widespread criminal activity occurred in News International? Isn't that why News of the World was forced to fold after over 150 years?

It appears to be yet another example of rewarding failure which seems to be so prevalent these days. Of course the more you earn and the greater the "responsibility" someone has the greater the reward for failure.

Did she 'fail'? She obviously did by the moral standards of the general public, but since the organisation she worked for was completely complicit with everything that was going on her bosses probably thought that she did a great job so have re-hired her. In fact no probably about it, the fact they've re-hired her proves it.

This is where I think the press have lost it. They have become conceited and arrogant and think they are untouchable and can just treat people like crap, take a slap on the wrist and a fine from court, then carry on as if nothing happened.

But we, the general public, still buy our papers whilst whinging about the underhand tactics of the press. Maybe if we actually acted with conviction and stopped buying papers then they might start revising their behaviours.

Sums it up really. Remember when the Milly Dowler stuff came out and the pitchforks were sharpened, the torches lit? People in their thousands bombarding companies who advertised in the News of the World, saying they'd never buy their products again if they continued to support the evil buggers? NotW shut down, then brief pause, then "Sun on Sunday" launched and normal serice resumed....

Mind you, I remember the Daily Mail solemnly promising to never again publish paparazzi shots after Saint Diana died. That went well too, huh?

It's a free market, we get the press we deserve. Depressing.

When you say 'we the general public still buy our papers', i don't doubt for one minute, judging by the cogent arguments here, that anyone who has contributed to this thread buys a redtop.
Unfortunately there is a massive percentage of the public who do buy them, don't think for themselves, and will not bat an eyelid at her return to prominence. It makes me sad and angry in equal measure

I'm not sure people even care about anything anymore.
Everyone knows phone hacking took place at those papers, it made people's life hell and re-employing her just flips the middle finger to the Family's involved. But I don't think people care as long as they have cheap booze and benifit scrounging pensions too blame everything on.

It does seem some what in bad taste to have her back but as some have already mentioned it was expected. Given that phone hacking is not now at the top of the news agenda, is the Mirror Groups court cases settled yet? Not hearted anything in a while. Also what's happened to all the Leverson recommendations?
