I'm still buzzing from the last scan. As soon as the sonographer located mini-me, his tadger was instantly undeniable, waving proudly in the womb-soup upon the screen.

I'd have been over the moon either way, but a little lad, what a 40th b'day present eh?

Cue the name list. Wow, its trickier than I remember. We have a few rules, the name must be easily shortened to a nice nickname, ideally not a 'standard' (ie, regular top 10/50/100) name (sorry, bit pretentious aren't i) - and of course we mustn't be ashamed to call it out loud in a supermarket.

Lochlan is currently high on the list as we really like Lochie or Lucky. But I don't do 'L's' so well, fat tongue syndrome, so i'm yet to be convinced.

I also like Willem (Willy or Lemmy) - but the OH isn't so keen as we have zero connection to Holland.

We have Scot and Irish roots, so happy to lean towards traditional names form those regions. I think i've exhausted every book/online resource so i'll be surprised if there are many original recommendations, but it'll be a pleasant surprise if you do have one.

Hit me!

My son was nearly called Tiernan, because of his mum's Irish roots...

Might fulfil your requirements...

Firstly, congratulations on your new addition!

Secondly, Derek. I have yet to meet a baby called Derek. Can be abbreviated to Del or Rek. I don't believe it is in the top 100 of current baby names either. Win, Win!

Louise.

😉

(I'm not keen on names with odd spelling. Willem, for example. Poor kid will spend ages saying "No, not William..." 🙂 )

Loads of great Scottish boys names (my son has one) and for Irish then it has to be Rory.

My youngest one is called Alastair.

He has maybe a 30% chance of anyone spelling it correctly.

Seems awfully presumptuous of you to assume his or her gender just because they have a penis.  Best to err on the side of caution and choose a gender neutral name so that your baby can feel under less pressure to conform to gender stereotypes. Here's a list for you

Cousin is called Rory so OH won't have it (shes a teacher so it's hard to get any name past her, based on her experience of satanic namesakes)

Barnaby is also taken (great name), and Toby is our dogs name 🙂

Miles is a maiden name in our family, but OH doesn't like it.

Jude, hmm not considered that one before, i'll see how it settles.

I like Milo, alas, OH doesn't.

To your initial criteria I'd add:

Easy to spell.

Easy to pronounce

Dougal / Dougie have previously piqued my interest.

BTW - middle name will likely be Peter.

Adolf - IIRC its one of the few 'banned' names at registry offices. Bit Nameist if you ask me.

Dirk. Dirk is a cool name.

Dougal / Dougie have previously piqued my interest.

Dugald. My family is littered with  alternating generations of Dugald ( my Grandad)  and Douglas (my oldest uncle, whose oldest son is named Dugald and whose oldest grandson is Douglas)

My wife's family had alternating  generations of Archibalds. Every second one was an Archie, alternating with Baldie.     ( Bal - pronounced like in ballet rather than like  in ball)

Or Alexander. Can be shortened to  Sandy ( like  my Dad ),  Alex, Eck, Xander

Finley or Finlay depending how popular you want it to be , gets shortened to Fin, Finn or Durks (shortened surname) depended on who it is but he even calls himself Durks these day due to that being his nickname at Football.

Dave/Rodney 🙂

I like the acronym game - last letter would be B, so tricky to make a good one with P as the middle name. Might need another middle name.

APB surely. So when you call him in for tea/dinner/supper depending on class and Northernness you can put out an APB.

So, Alan. There aren't enough Alans in the world.

Anyway, some great Oirish names but can I just advise that if you choose one, pick one that’s easily pronounced and spelled.

My sister named her little boy Ivor.

That was a head scratcher for me as its traditionally a Welsh name, so I asked why.

Apparently Ivor is of Scandinavian and Old Norse origin and its meaning is 'archer-soldier, bowman'.

We're from Nottinghamshire...... Think about it.....

Also his dad's name is Thomas..... Again, think about it......

Good reasons I think. I like it.

My favourite boys name is Alfred. After the greatest English King, and it shortens nicely to Alfie when you're young and Alf when you're an old fart.

Well, for Norse you've got to consider Thor (after the cyclist) or Odin (after a loud noise).

Was going to say Stanley which is what we called our lad as it was way off the top 100 when we named him and I haven't kept up with fashion as the next one was a girl but it seems it's a solid middle order type name these days.

Good luck whatever, just make sure it scans ok as a name and works with his middle name for those occasions when you really need to use his full name. ;o)

If you are going to use a nickname, just give him the nickname or choose a short name in the first place.

Nicknames are for when you either don't like your name, or it it's too much of a mouthful to bother with 😉

It's a pain in the backside working for a large company when you are known by a nickname as no one can find you on the corporate directory.  I then changed directory listing to my nickname (which doesn't help as there are various ways to spell it) but then all my official stuff like qualifications and ID cards ended up with my nickname!
