Myself and my Dad were out on a ride yesterday. He is 77 and rides a Giant Dirt-e. At the start of a road climb on our route a "Roadie" approaches from behind and whist passing decides to do a cocky one handed pass and proceeded to start up the hill.
I'm on my tractor and would never have a chance against his bike that weighed less than a matchbox and skinny tyres.
So I said to the old man go and get him.
Off he went in pursuit. Caught the roadie up and he seemed surprised to see the Giant on his tail. He tried to pull away but was beginning to fail. The old man drop backed, switched into sport and powered on past up and totally left the roadie for dead.
The Giant beat the roadie up the hill by at least 3 minutes 🙂
According to my Dad the roadie gave him a wry smirk as he passed and went on his way. We dived onto some some singletrack and went our way.
Yes is was wrong to bully a roadie and totally own him. But he should'nt of done the one handed pass and this hill is easy look.
Red rag to an old Bull.
PS I think I might get an e-bike. That Focus looks good ...:)
PPS Anyone else got any fun roadie owning stories.
We have a lot of middle aged fatty commuters on ebikes here you learn not to chase them, bless, their boners must make it hard to stay seated 😉
are you for real?
disappointing lack of Bombers.
Have the schools broken up already?
(and what's a one handed pass?)
I'm pretty sure the roadie couldn't care less about being passed by a vehicle with a motor attached, it happens to me 100's of times most rides 😆 Good on your dad for staying active at 77.
Cool story!
Yes is was wrong to bully a roadie and totally own him.
yeah, but...you didn't really, did you?
I'm all for e bikes don't get me wrong and I know a few old geezers who could "own" quite a few younger cyclists, but using an electric powered bike sort of misses the point, no?
Bike Snob
which leads Mountain Bikers to do extremely irritating things like try to race Roadies who are simply out for a ride, which, if you're a Roadie, is sort of like being goaded by a hillbilly while you're browsing an art gallery.
what's a one handed pass?

I passed a roadie in my car the other day. I was doing about 55mph.
Sucker!
totally own him
I'm so hard for you right now, you are my freeride King of the road hero.
Bromance, incest, bestiality and a huge dose of testosterone all in one post. Well done you. 8)
I drove up a hill faster that a guy on a bike the other, it was awesome.........
WTF, is a 'cocky one handed pass' anyway and why is it not good?
yeah, but...you didn't really, did you?
^^^^
This
what's a one handed pass?
I believe it's genital touching but with one hand on the bars?
I beat a whole group of roadies to the top of an Alp once by at least half an hour. They were wearing lycra and aero helmets, the lot! I had a cup of coffee then stood in front of my van waving my nob at them as they wheezed past. Totally owned.

E-bikes - the SUP of the mountainbiking world.
I'm all for a bit of informal 'racing' and turning myself inside out to keep up/overtake the guy in front, but why do people bother when on E-bikes?
I'm pretty sure the OP is written tongue in cheek. That's how it reads to me anyway.
Round our way it's the season for roadies esp now the Tour has started
I ride a mile or so back along the lanes from the Chase and the last section is downhill onto the main road. I always cut the corner (it's a cycle lane for the school), join the road via the bus stop at warp 10 😈 and then hammer it the last few 100 m home.
Last night I joined the road just behind one of the said roadies. He was going for it 110% and so was I we both passed another roadie who must've wondered WTF was going on fat bike vs road bike. Roadie had to slow for traffic in the outside lane I passed on the inside with a friendly thumbs up
Childish really 🙂
Anyone else got any fun roadie owning stories.
Not that can compete with yours
Myself and my Dad were out on a ride yesterday
My dad and I were out... grammar these days (well it is STW)
I'm pretty sure the OP is written tongue in cheek. That's how it reads to me anyway.
e-bike defence? 😆
worst... anecdote.... ever
Yeah, another "them and us" tale on STW. A pretty crap tale at that. And posted in the wrong forum.
You do know that motor pacing has a long history in road riding? To be honest, I'd be delighted if someone in their 70's was able to ride an e-road bike and be able to keep up with me. But "owned", really?
errr...
unwritten rule of STW - never boast of owning a roadie
the rider may have been at the end of a century ride, may be bonking, may be one of the fat, wheezing biffers off here etc
good on yer old dad though (even if he was riding a fanny's bike)
I must go out tonight on the Fireblade and 'own some roadies', it sounds so much fun. I could do laps round their local TT circuit. They'll be so impressed with my superior fitness.
We had jacket potatoes for tea.
True story.
Congratulations to your dad for fathering you when he was in his early 60s.
Myself and my Dad were out on a ride yesterday. He is 77 and rides a Giant Dirt-e.
That's quite old to have a child still in primary school.
And what is a 'cocky one handed pass', sounds erotic. Are you sure he wasn't giving you a friendly wave as he passed?
and whist passing decides to do a cocky one handed pass
Your interpretation of his actions shows massive insecurity issues on your part. Seek help immediately, before you hurt yourself.
If he'd shouted "Wan&^%$" and given the international sign for being a to$$er as he passed you it would have been different.
🙂
Quick check:
Has the OP been back yet?
Didn't think so.
this thread owns almost as much as the ops story.
I do like the 'go get 'im Dad' part of the story though. 🙂 and off he went.
It was a good laugh 🙂
At least the old man is back on his bike.
....and the one handed pass???
....and the one handed pass???
I'm guessing downtube shifters.
....and the one handed pass???I'm guessing downtube shifters.
Or a quick fumble in the op's lycra as he rode by. 🙂
By "one handed pass" do you mean he waved at you?
Nice work.
The thing that made me laugh when I do it is that initial look of surprise/panic when a 3" tyre'd full suss flies past them on their super light wonder horse, even if it only lasts a few seconds (takes a bit longer on mine as the battery is integrated, so harder to spot) before they realise you are on an ebike.
In truth I'm actually kind of embarrassed when I overtake on it, as the reaction is always the same. 'Bloody ebikes...'
A lady roadie owned me going through ambergate the other day on the a6. I gave her 20 yards then caught her up on my gnar poon. I drafted her and enjoyed the view back to belper. That'll teach her I'm sure!
enjoyed the view back to belper
Never heard it called that before.
The thing that makes me laugh is when I'm on my road bike trying to stay in HR zone 3 for a few hours, and a hardcore-you-know-the-score fatty on a MTB starts bombing past me as I'm maintaining a training schedule up a hill, and then they chuckle and smirk as I hold back staying in zone 3.
That's what makes me laugh.
Probably...

Once, aged 18 or so (and full of sprint without much endurance) me and a mate were coming back from 5 or so miles in the woods, with a 10 mile road ride at each end. As we pulled onto the road we saw a roadie some distance ahead. We turned ourselves inside out to catch and pass him, which we did. So much so that by the time I got home I'd bonked so badly I was in a really bad way, shaking and almost too confused to get myself something to eat. Felt awful for ages.
The roadie was cruising comfortably, probably on a long base ride. Not much of a victory, really 🙂
It's fun to see if you can close the gap on a roadie up ahead, but it usually only works until he/she actually notices you're there. 🙂
Any roadie I can pass/drop is by definition not trying all that hard.
I once went past 3 roadies on a cold n wet n windy day up a long slow incline. They then proceeded to use me as a wind n water break before passing me at the top.
I quite enjoy draughting roadies when on the mountain bike. It's good for them, makes them realise they need to ride harder.
But you can only do it for so long as ultimately they should be on a significantly more efficient bike.
I did enjoy beasting a couple wobbling all over the place on their folding bikes on a hill the other day and those little kids on the strawberry line didn't know what hit them when I powered past 😈 😉
Dont insult roadies op, thats 90% of this forum who do actually ride a bike.
I think if the roadie was wearing these he deserved everything he got!
Yeh wearing just about the most comfortable shorts you can buy is idiotic.

I bet you also make the overtake move just before you're about to turn off the road you're on and think you've 'won'. Or make the move then totally die.
@oldtalent-source please... 😉
"One handed pass" = OP is so unstable on his bike that he's unable to take his hands off the bars until stationary. So one handed is "showing off".
Or alternatively the roadie had been on the phone, or putting some food back in his pocket, or some clothes. You know, all those things that stable and incontrol riders can do on the move.
...make the overtake move just before you're about to turn off the road you're on ...
A bloke has done that to me twice on the cycle way part of my commute home in almost the same spot both times; comes past blowing out of his arse only to almost immediately anchor on and turn across me down a side path. I just found it odd. Now that I know it's coming, I may just up my pace as he comes along side and block his turn. Because, you know, that's the mature thing to do.
Relevant to the OP himself rather than the post content..
What an unusual job he has! (according to the website in his profile)
Hand painted archery target maker!!
Just sayin.
Hand painted archery target maker!!Just sayin
Sounds more exciting than being a quantity surveyor. 😉
For the record, not all roadies are super fit and some are easy targets for an overtake
*waves* 😆
For the record, not all roadies are super fit and some are easy targets for an overtake
Or just not trying. I do most of my commutes at an easy pace as I do 20 miles each way pretty much every day. I seldom put a lot of effort in.
On the way home I have a long uphill drag, about 4 miles, and I had a guy last week on a rattly old hybrid with hub gears who put in a massive effort to pass me, he passed but couldn't keep up the momentum once he was out in the wind, it was quite funny to watch, i moved further out into the road so I wasn't drafting him and he continued his gargantuan effort. The best bit was when he reached for the bar ends he had mounted either side of the stem so he could get into an aero tuck.
I often pass folks on my roadie, then get overtaken by them straight after. Usually I'll nail myself on a hill, overtake someone, then have a rest at the top.
Do people look badly upon doing this?
It's only "owning" them if three of you are passed while having biscuits before the last 20miles of the 130 of the day, then proceed to hunt them down and overtake while smoking massive stinky spliffs and all chatting and riding no-handed.
Yeah.
aye there's no sport there, even in the good natured commuter racing, it takes 2 to "race". So, if you're in the mood for a bit of fun be sure you're not giving it 100% when you pass, if they speed up then it's game on, put the hammer down.....and find out what happens 🙂and then they chuckle and smirk as I hold back staying in zone 3
Dropping people who won't take a turn up front is also perfectly reasonable imo.
I stopped reading after seeing the letter 'e' after giant
I'm refusing to read the whole of your post, but I'm gathering by the responses, your proud that you passed a roadie on a e-bike?!
COOL STORY BRO
You've all been trolled. A real Redthunder thread would obviously have photos.

POSTED 3 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST.
There always someone who will take an obvious tongue in cheek wind up comment seriously and make a knobbish comment assuming the worst of the poster.
Too easy!
I was actually joking but thanks for being abusive. Have a nice day.
How funny that you've done exactly what you accused me of, oh the irony.
It's fun to see if you can close the gap on a roadie up ahead, but it usually only works until he/she actually notices you're there.
Or until (s)he cares about how fast other people are riding.
The only times I care are on big headwind days, where I'm always happy to meet one of the commuters on my route that I know a bit so we can draft each other into it.
Luckily my commute is pretty flat so I won't get "owned" by any e-bikes on it. Which is a great relief. Especially if I ever wave or say hi to anyone I pass.
I enjoyed the part where you 'released' your dad's revenge-fu: 'Go and get him!'
I'm sure glad I wasn't that cocky one-handed upstart roadie, and no mistake!
Pretty sure the Op's intention with this thread was clear with the wink in the title. btw Op did you look at his route on strava flyby?
I cruised past a guy who had been trying to clip in to his (hopefully) new spd so pedals for about 300m today. I gave him a little wave, and so did my son on the back of the bike
I gave him a little wave
You passed him one-handed? And encouraged your son to do the same? (Shakes head).
Once on a trail break event out Pricess Risbourgh way, myself and cycling buddy spotted a rather portly roadie in full team team lycra a hundred yards in front of us on a short road climb that joined the ridgeway with another bridleway. As we were both on single speeds (me on a singular swift) we both enjoyed reeling him in and passing him. Can't remember the excuse he came out with as we passed. He did say something lame..
If only I was fit enough to still do that today 🙁
Oh that's what the P in P Risborough stands for, I've wondered since we went to Thorpe Park last year but not bothered to look it up.
Nodders are out in force this week, had a guy on a battered mountain bike try to race me up a hill on my way home, he dropped behind for a bit but then did some risky filtering to plop himself right in front of me at the next set of lights and I was stuck behind him for the next mile because the traffic was too bad to over take.
Someone else went past me as I was sat at a red light this morning then when the light changed I caught up pretty much straight away. Does my nut when people jump reds, especially when the general public are more bike aware for these three weeks. Makes us all look like cooks.
Next time I'll have my helmet cam on 😉
It was a bit of fun, the roadie acknowledged it as a laugh, hence putting it in the chat forum.
As for e-bikes...when I'm 77 I'm getting one for sure. Probably be nuclear powered by then.
Perhaps I need to explain the now infamous "one handed pass"... I was slogging it on the start of the climb almost straight away. When the roadie caught us up and them proceeded to ride by with one hand messing around with his headphones and generally trying to make it look easy. I dont think he realized how steep the road was to become around the next few bends.
So, with little encouragement the e-rider (old man) was off partly to test his bike out and see what it could do.
If makes all you guys happy, I'm the one who got lift his bike over all the gates....and believe me it's heavy.
I know what you're saying - I've seen those headphones/smartphone/Garmin/water-bottle fiddlers/beard-twizzlers at it with my own eyes. They have a whole ride to make necessary adjustments but they save the moment just to look nonchalant as they blow past! Projection be d*mned! Deserve all the septuagenarian moped punishment they get 😈
"He shouldn't [s]of[/s] HAVE done the one handed pass"
Many years ago I was riding up Quarry Bank in Cradley Heath on an early Saturday morning. Aged about 20 on my 25lb XC bike, characteristically hungover and knackered, I was blowing out of my arse. I was overtaken by a woman in at least her 70's on an aged 20" wheeled shopper with a basket on the front.
That OP is being owned!
A one-handed pass leads to owning the guy..sounds pretty sexual to me. Is this a story where we should be reading between the lines? 😀
It's something I'd do, to be fair, build up passing speed, then make sure your cig is lit when you glide past them.
Bonus points for taking a swig out of your bottle at the same time. Lol!
messing around with his headphones
Well why didn't you say before? Wearing headphones = deserved everything he got
I'm defo going to get some #onehandedpass in this weekend
I'm at the hardcore opposite end of the spectrum. Not being riding as much as I used to due to FunkmasterJunior. Climbing a swine of a hill on my super light Transition Trans AM (made from the highest quality lead) and wheezing like Darth Vader having an asthma attack.
Next thing I know I'm being overtaken by a group of power walkers / hill runner types. I smiled at them and laughed, safe in the knowledge that I would catch them on the downhill segment that was just around the corner. I would have my vengeance, screaming down the hill, yelling my battle cry of "coming through" whilst watching them dive for cover like so many startled rabbits in the face of my awesome, gnar skillz!
By the time I got to said downhill section they were nowhere to be seen. Pwned!
