Yeah, I wonder how much mooney they are throwing at enforcement as well? Shit for brains these politicians, they've always got to be messing with something haven't they?

Isn't that what they want?

Because then you can catch more people out and get more revenue from the fines then you would just the tax on its own.

Especially now there are cameras that will check the plate and spit out a fine automatically.

youd have to dig into this info

The data, published every two years, shows that the government potentially lost out on £107m from 755,000 unlicensed vehicles last year.
The RAC said the decision to get rid of the paper tax disc three years ago has proved "costly".
The measure was meant to have saved the Treasury £10m.

the canmeras are missleading, if its like speed cameras they cost more to run than they make in fines (hence why austerity has seen a lot turned off)

why don't they just add it to the tax on fuel? surely that would be easier?

although it would mean that the Clarksonettes can't complain about cyclists not paying road tax

Exactly, then you just pay as you go.

Its more people chancing it than paper disc being used to enforce the tax.

The 107 million was last year, what was it when paper discs where in use? Given time I think it will be be as effective.

I'm sure the old bill love being used as tax collectors between the 15/20th of every month total waste of time for them having to be parked up on main road junctions all day

Unless there are more ANPR cameras there was bound to be an escalation in duty evasion because there is no longer a visual indication of whether the duty has been paid.
Still there are plenty of apps out there that let you check. Like I did yesterday when this random Audi turned up in our street (public road) a couple of weeks ago. Its declared SORN with no insurance, so its been reported to the DVLA as abandoned. 😈

How can you enforce ANPR camera recognition on number plates that are incomprehensible and obliterated to make the names of the owners Dog/wife/cookhold 😆
The schemes flawed, should have been completed altogether on one plate as suggested in the consultation stage, 2yr MOTs/Years Insurance/Years Tax all on one plate & renew every yearly cycle..

Still, keeps PLOD off the road network enabling more speeding and dodgy vehicles and uninsured drivers for us to navigate around.

Politicians eh, was BloJo part of the original scope ? Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest..
😛

As the article mentions probably somewhat to do with the change when vehicles changes hands and tax has to be renewed which a lot of people still seem unaware of

As with many of these things the fines should be set to at least fund the enforcement.

But if the vehicle's keeper details aren't updated / fake, ANPR cameras aren't worth diddly - who will they be sending letters to?

My (girl) friend got caught out, just bought a secondhand (new to her) car and because she seems to live on Planet Fluffy didn’t Tax it, nor insure it.. genuinely thought the dealership did this kind of thing.. it was clamped and sat on a side road in Harrogate for a few days whilst she sorted it out.. clearly no ANPR involved there but those pesky traffic wardens, they’ve got eyes like hawks so they have..

I don't understand why registration, mot and tax are not all related in date, payment and display on vehicle.

Most filling stations have number plate recognition. Link that to the Tax database and prevent filling up unless taxed.

New rules mean that it's the seller's responsibility to inform the DVLA of a change of ownership. until you do that you are liable for any fines the car accrues. Sure we did this a few months back?

I've suggested that idea before but it would prompt a huge black market in false / cloned / stolen plates. Gets rid of one problem at the epxense of another.

Think this is how it works in Portugal. There is no road tax, instead the tax is on the fuel.

Fuel is a bit more expensive than elsewhere in Europe, but it is a much more progressive way of taxing car use, especially for those who don't do lots of km's....

Can't see how this happened as when we bought our new (to us) car from the main dealers garage, it wasn't going anywhere until they'd got proof of insurance and tax.

A lot of dealers provide short term "get you home" insurance for a week or so...

Hydraulic rams set into the road. Car triggers camera...car sent skywards into handily placed crusher. Fire could also used.

With the old tax disc everybody could see that you were dodgy - no tax
so it shamed the non tax payers - now there is no visual clue so some
just do it as their low level tax evasion , not forgetting all those in genuine hardship that simply cannot afford it and now have a choice not to pay as there are no road police so you do net feel compelled.
