Today, while watching the Tour of Britain I noted one dopey woman who was so intent on making sure her disinterested child sat on her shoulders had a good view of the race she stepped into the road and nearly got clipped by a team car. Meanwhile not far away a motorist, held up for a few minutes while the race passed and who must have realised they weren't going anywhere, kept their engine chugging for all the time they were stationary.
Maybe next year the organisers will have loudspeaker vans in advance of the race warning people to stay out of the ****ing road.
this is you first time watching road racing, yes?
No, I've seen it happen before and I wonder how long it will be until the inevitable injury or death occurs.
spectators are frequently injured watching pro road racing, there have even been a few deaths
riders have also been injured clashing with errant spectators
I have to be honest, it would be impossible without barriers the whole way (and therefore closing the road for much longer) to stop people possibly steppng out. I saw the Tour Of Britan come through Tavistock in stage 5 on Thursday and there were thousands of people. However I think the police bikes and teams did a good job of making their prescence known. The marshals did **** all but stand around watching!
Yes I'm aware of such incidents in the TdF; often caused by errant children. And further along the road someone decided it would be a really good idea to bring along an excitable dog. At least they kept it on a lead.
makes me wonder why people watch road cycling more
Someone left their engine running?
OMG!
I watch very little road racing ( mainly Olympic and commonwealth )but what I have noticed is people straight after a camera bike passes.
They lean right in staring straight into the camera both hands waving in the classic hi mum format , seemingly totally oblivious to the rider/s behind the camera bike and nearly taking them out with a Scottish kiss in there eagerness to get on the tv.
I think cyclists should be aloud to carry a small frame mounted Shillelagh they could quickly deploy and use to issue a warning coming through blow to the head of any offending spectators.
I would watch more .
