Just come back from a glorious ride, the bluebells were abundant, birds singing and sun shining. Got home and as I came in my dog bounced around flinging toys around like a right loon. I went in to the lounge with him to find my OH in tears. We'd just got out dogs test results back. Cancer. A very rare form in an are that is inoperable. 3-4 months given. I feel like someone has punched me in the gut. He is an older dog, a boxer we rescued 2.5 years ago. He was abandoned with all sorts of medical problems and in great pain. We've given him an amazing home and he has brought us so much fun and joy and it feels as though we haven't had enough time with him. I suppose I am writing this as I cannot verbally talk to anyone about it at the moment as I know I'll just burst out in tears. Rubbish.
Anyway, if you have a dog, go and hug them.

Try and focus on this bit.
I know it can't be easy but think of all the extra love and fun he's had in those 2.5 years with you.
These posts always make me well-up, I'll be devastated when something happens to our two Cockers. As above, focus on the fabulous time you have had with him and all the good things you have done for him.
We rescued our lurcher girl at 4.5 years old. One of our reservations was that as she was older, we'd get less time with her and we'd likely feel more cheated when that time came.
Like us, you took him on regardless of his issues to make what he had left, the best it could be, to make up for what they had to endure before.
How much it hurts when they've gone only goes to show how much you love them while they're here.
Now go spoil him rotten for what remains.
So sorry. Not helpful but here's my two, two minutes ago. Both rescues both better now than they were. If you go that reception he really does love and appreciate you and all you've done and will do.
Thanks for the replies. It is a tough one, but I know we have given him an amazing home with lots of love and attention. Had to tell the wider family yesterday which was tough, as they all adore him and have dog sat for us and enjoyed his company at family gatherings. They really do become an integral part of the family don't they?!
I’ve lost four dogs in my life and apart from Rachel’s death they have hit me harder than anything else. I don’t know why.
Sorry to hear your news mate.
I think this picture sums up his time with us, asleep in the back of our camper van, it is one of just sheer contentment.

So sorry to hear that, but like others have said you can take some small comfort in knowing you gave him the best life he could have had in the years he was with you. Now off to give ours a big hug...

Where's the like button when you need it? He may have had a hard life but he eventually won the lottery with you guys.
That is a truly lovely photo.
Be happy with the knowledge that you gave him a happy, loving home and he reciprocated that love back. Your wonderful photo shows a calm, happy and relaxed dog, what more could a dog owner ask for!
*wanders off to give my dog a hug
Oh man I understand. Nothing to say really other than thanks to you from doggo, and to be good to yourselves through this. Enjoy your times. It’s the best thing you can do.
Mrs Rider and/or I have many occasions had to take off into other rooms to emote, so as our dog can’t sense/hear it.
And you already know they pick up on/empathise with their family’s every changing mood! But then they can forget about it in a moment and get pack to play!
In this respect I wish that we were more like dogs as it’s especially tough on us humans!
Stay on your game. Hugs from the household.
Lesson 1.01
Life is unfair.
A dog doesn't know it though; he has no knowledge of the future and of time, long or short, only of today and now and here. Make sure his today, here and now are as good as they can be and he'll never need to understand what unfair is.
That's it. Dogs are simple creatures. They are either happy here and now or not. They don't worry about the future, so don't worry about it for them.
