Evening All,

I could do with a couple of pointers ....

Situation.

Parents Sony Vaio laptop & Virgin broadband provided by one of their WiFi routers.

The laptop, running the most current MS OS, needs prompting each time it starts to connect to their WiFi. I have tried setting the default once connected to the router but the laptop seems to disregard this information.

There is a second router "found" when looking for WiFi which belongs to next door but that's secured much like my parents.

Why cannot I set their router as the default.

What am I doing wrong.

I told them they should have bought an apple device 😉

Hmmm, Windows 8? Don't know how that works, but in Windows 7 I think there is a 'Connect automatically' option... Is that what you're referring to?

Yes.

The connect automatically option is enabled it just doesn't seem to remember that it is enabled.

Have you tried deleting the connection to their router and re-connecting ?

Latest drivers for the adapter? Check Sony's website.

Not sure why that would happen, if the laptop drivers update fails, maybe try changing the router wifi channel? (wifi networks clashing, and causing issues?)
How old is the laptop? Has it ever connected reliably? If so, maybe a system restore or even at worst a system rebuild might be a worst case answer

Sony has its own connectivity software (VAIO connect) which needs to be configured. The icon is in the system tray and is orange and white as far as I remember. Even if you use Windows to control the connection it seems to always want to takeover!
