Looking to add a network hard drive to my (folks) router (to appear as a network drive) that they could back up to from both a desktop (PC) and laptop.

If it makes any difference the desk top is hardwired to the router and the laptop is used wirelessly.

Can you guys & gals help?

Probably. What are you asking?

Windows 7/Vista backups only work to a network drive on the Ultimate editions, which p*sses me off. However there are probably 3rd party products that do it.

I tried to plug a hard drive into my Belkin N router and it would not work at all.

Ah.... yes ....

As far as I am aware both computers are running windows 7 64bit.

Looking for ideas as to suitable network drves and if windows 7 has built in back up software as std.

Mush easier on my mac 😆

RAID1 NAS drive for their data connected to the router? Depends on what question you are asking - see Cougar 😉

I have one of these for backup duties, though it will do a lot more than just act as a RAID 1 fileserver. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Just wire it into your router and give it a static IP address and Bob is well acquainted with your aunty.

( well, you'll need to set up an account, create a share and then back the data up to the share... but the software is pretty easy to use )

I have a Buffalo Linkstation for exactly that purpose. It comes with some backup software that seems not to work on Windows 7. So I use Comodo, which is free.

But how much so they need to backup i.e. how much actual unique 'data' do they have? Would it all fit on dropbox etc.? For me there are a few important documents, and a lot of photos. The rest of the stuff on the PCs doesn't actually need backing up (operating system, music, recorded TV).

I use a USB hard drive and just plug it in and run a DOS batch file from my desktop. I only backup selected folders rather than everything. I don't need to archive so it's easier to find and copy back files

@echo off
ECHO Updating files to Iomega backup drive
xcopy C:\dad E:\dad /D /E /C /R /H /I /K /Y
xcopy C:\mum E:\mum /D /E /C /R /H /I /K /Y
pause

The switches mean only new or updated files get copied over.
