SSDs look to be getting fairly cheap now so I'm thinking of getting one as a boot drive. What features/issues should I be looking out for? I know my current motherboard only supports SATA2 so speeds will be limited a bit - will I still notice a significant improvement over the Samsung Spinpoint that I'm booting from at the moment?
IME, yes! I saw a huge improvement in boot times.
Recommendation wise, I moved over to Corsair Force 3s after reading reviews a year or two back. Things may well have changed, but they're still working well for me.
I added an OCZ Agility 3 SSD as a boot drive to my PC a few months ago and watched the prices drop in half in the past few weeks 🙁
I think its the best upgrade I've added to my computer, boot up in under 30s and every program starts up almost instantly
No guru but wannabe ...
Worth trying out as boot drive if the price is reasonable but do check forums for reliable ones as some have firmware problems. I have Intel SSD as boot drive and Samsung HD for data storage.
Boot time is about 25 seconds for me and not more.
Apart from my constant messing with software ... my system is fine. I once cleaned out the registry which resulted in messing up the system with constant BSOD but I hope I have sorted it last night.
My cheapo (less than £35) graphic card is the bottleneck at the moment but since I am not game player I just have to live with it. Awful graphic card driver.
An SSD is a very good way of speeding up a PC, with the benefit of being totally silent in use and using far less power.
However, there are IMHO some dogs out there...
OCZ Octane - 2 out of 2 that I have bought have failed. Totally. With no warning. This is a bad thing.
Corsair - the one that I put in my desktop PC has a known firmware issue. Corsair refuse to do anything to fix the problem as they would rather concentrate on selling the next generation of drives.
