So.. I just managed to crack the work laptop screen..and yes I'm working from home..Doh!!!
I hooked the laptop up to the TV and can work off of that as a temporary fix. How hard/easy is it to replace a screen, about 10% of the screen is damaged. I'm thinking buy one off of ebay and replace ?
It entirely depends on the model of laptop.
Ranging from <30mins with normal screwdrivers, all the way to >hours with proprietary/unusual tools.
It's also more than a little bit dependant on how much 'mechanical sympathy' you have for working on delicate electronics, even the easy to fix ones can be broken further during repair if you're not careful.
So, what make and model, and how good are you at this kind of thing?
My HP was pretty straight forward, lots of guides online and plenty of aftermarket screens (and OEM are quite reasonable price wise too sometimes)
My Dell was pretty easy. As above, there'll be a guide on YouTube I bet. Have a look on there too see if you think it's within your skill level. I think in general, older machines are easier to work on.
My daughter’s Dell was also pretty easy to fix and there was a YouTube vid for the specific model.
What's your employer like, with larger employers its often a replacement laptop in the post by 9am tomorrow, with it left to your boss to decide if you are a numpty or not.
Try ifixit.com and YouTube for guides. Some are easy, like older Macs and HP. Some are basically impossible -like newer Macs.
A decent set of precision screwdrivers helps. And plastic spudgers for prying open stuff or removing ribbon connectors. eBay is good for spare parts and random tools
