In a small office and we have a Synology NAS, Billion router all working great in the office.

We do need remote access and I've tried to sort this thru the Synology guide, but it doesn't work. I suspect I've missed a simple but crucial step.

Can anyone guide me thru this (step by step probably) - happy to pay if needs be.

Thanks

How exactly are you wanting to access it? over ssh, http? I'm assuming you've opened the ports required to external access on your router?

Not familar with Synology but it was very easy with my Qnap NAS.

The Qnap wizard registered a username/url with the Qnap portal which effectively works as a dynamic DNS service. The wizard then uses upnp (Universal Plug and Play) to map ports on my ADSL Router to services on the NAS.

First thing I would check is that the config of your Billion router has been modified as required. You should see something like "Port Mappings" for the services you want to access remotely.

You would also be far more likely to get help posting on the Synology community than STW.

Good lick!

I guess that you are trying to use the Cloud Station feature?

Remote access - can mean many different things!

Do you connect via VPN to the office?

Does your office internet connection have an external static IP?

Hi all. I tried setting up the access via Synology's EZ Internet function, which I thought identifies the router, sets port and allows access ... but I'm then struggling to know literally how to access at that point.

I believe the internet connection is static.

Cletus - haven't had joy on the Synology forum. And no, I don't think it's the cloud approach. We're after just being able to access files stored on the NAS.

Prezet - I think we're trying to access via http. This might be the problem ie. opening the router ports, but don't know how to. I thought the EZ internet would do it?

This prob demonstrates my ignorance, so apologies! We've also tried to get an IT consultant in, but they don't seem interested as 'such a small problem'!

Have you had a look at this guide? It seems to be fairly straight forward.

Step 1 (optional) - setup DNS for something like "nas.yourwebsite.com"

Step 2 - open port 80 (and/or 443) on your router, allowing external access to the NAS.

Step 3 - type nas.yourwebsite.com into your browser, login, and ta-da... your files over HTTP!

What model of router?

Has Synology set you up with a dynamic DNS service - something like dyndns.com ? If so, use the address that you set up with that to access the drive from an external connection to test it.

cranberry - yep, I go thru the steps (seems pretty styraightforward in theory!) and I create a DDNS which is called mix.synology.me

But typing that into the address bar gives me an error.

The Synology steps do (I think) open the router ports (I've selected port 80), so I wonder if I'm being dumb and just not accessing via the web with the right address???
