...no ones mentioned it yet so here goes.

If you’re going to attack a country with missiles expect to be hit back with force.

Most Palestinians don’t want this it’s Hamas militants being complete cock wombles.

If France started chucking missiles at the UK would we do nothing...absolutely not.

War it’s a shit thing.

That statement applies to both sides. The normalisation of the far right within Israeli politics has made matters so much worse.

And do you wonder why Hamas exists and why it's chucking missiles at Israel?

there is also the question of proportionality of retaliatory response. Hamas launch home made rockets, Israel launches airstrikes and rolls in the tanks.

isreal / palestine is a facked up thing and has been for decades, and will likely continue to be so, particularly when Netanyahu and the hardliners as set on breaking international law and annexing further territories.

it may sound like i'm taking sides, i'm not, but there is a wide and lengthy historical context to consider when viewing current events

There is no right here. Extremists on both sides destroy innocent lives.

Whilst you shouldn't be surprised if you poke a bear and it rips your head off, in this case the bear consistently overreacts amd gets away with it.

Centuries of wars, decades of self interest by the wider international community has just left the whole situation a mess.

It needs compassion and concessions on all sides to come to a lasting acceptable peace deal, but I've no idea what that looks like.

Full disclosure - wife's extended family includes a now elderly aunt in Israel. And I have sometimes voted Labour for balance.

I just wrote a long, angry response, but deleted it. there's no point.

needless to say, I'll pick a side, and it sure as hell isn't the Israelis.

A vile group of people in power.

You began that story at stage 3, neglecting to mention 1 & 2.

War is horrific. I hate it, and I hate the idea that there will be mums and dads and their children cowering in terror as I type this.

But...

And do you wonder why Hamas exists and why it’s chucking missiles at Israel?

Not really. The Palestinians lost their homes and their land when, in the wake of the horrors of WWII, a majority of the international community thought it would be a good idea to displace them in favour of a people that had just suffered unspeakable loss.

It was an epic, and historic, mistake.

But what's done is done. It has been seventy years, and the only realistic way forward is for the militants to stop threatening Israel's existence. Isn't it only Egypt in the region that recognises Israel? No wonder they feel so defensive and act so aggressively. The thing is, however right the Palestinian complaint may be, Israel isn't going away. It just isn't.

So now, it's a bit like the Berlin wall, I think. Hamas (or whomever) just needs to unilaterally declare that it won't be launching any more rockets, or trying to kill Israeli civilians anymore, and for Israel to say it will work with the Palestinian authorities to build a prosperous Gaza and West Bank, and to integrate the Palestinian peoples into its economic infrastructure.

Tragically, I don't think either thing will happen very soon.

In the meantime, I kind of like the proposal to declare Jerusalem a 'World Capital'. Make it everyone's and nobody's at the same time.

Yet israeli expansionism continues unabated. Stealing palestinan land isn't a matter of historical fact, it's happening currently and is regular.
