OK, so a group of us are of to the IOM over the May bank holiday weekend. None of us have been there before.
We'll be on motorbikes and there's a few pillions too.
So, apart from riding through villages at 180mph (as per Guy M in his Aston) does anyone have any suggestions of things that we should do or see? Obviously a steady lap or two of the mountain course appeals, but apart from that we're looking for ideas.
We're staying in Douglas.
Thanks in advance!!
It's a beautiful island [especially] when the sun's out. Go exploring, hug the coast, watch the sunset from a deserted beach, go up to the Point of Ayre at mid-tide and watch the tidal race. Laxey wheel is worth a look round, and the motorcycle museum at Bungalow. climb Sneafell on a clear day - views are spectacular.
Cheers Ned, appreciated. Have now got the wheel in the plan - but would you believe the museum at the bungalow has now closed?
are you kidding? mtbing!!
It's difficult to get the bikes on the bikes so to speak.....
I know, we should be going over in nice warm dry cars with plenty of luggage room, but we kind of like the motorbikes 8)
Plenty of scope for exploring on the bikes, lots of nice country roads or little beaches whilst being small enough to never get truly lost.
Niarbyl Café is a beautiful place to stop for lunch, nice little beach and not unusual to spot basking sharks from there.
As above climb (or get the tram up) Snaefell for views that stretch to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
From Douglas get the electric tram to Laxey, or steam train south if you fancy a pub lunch without the bikes.
Peel for an ice cream and walk round the castle.
...and come back with proper bikes.
edit 😀
If you're in Douglas head to [url=
Bakehouse[/url] for fantasic bread and food.
(Run by my wife cousin!)
Take a trip down to the sound. It's a beautiful place and there's a great restaurant down there.
Another place worth heading is into Peel to get some Kipper baps from Deverau's shop there. Last time we went to the TT we did a couple of early morning laps each morning followed by a trip to Peel for breakfast 😀
Thanks Jekkyl, but I think we'll swerve the pedal bikes this time.
And the sound...... sounds lovely! Definitely on the must do list.
Cheers all 😉
Ice cream from Dennisons in Peel
Drive the coast road and call in to the Cosy Nook Cafe in Port Erin for a huge breakfast, Peel for icecream and the castle as above. Manx queenies too.
Top of Laxey Wheel has cracking views on a clear day. Drive the TT and when you watch it on TV, you'll think how mental the speeds they do really are.
Call in at Jurby Junk for a look around and you be amazed at what tat they try to sell, dolls legs and arms, proper crap but its ace!! You have to buy something.
Bike museum is now shut but you can go to the museum in Douglas which has a couple of bikes and loads of other stuff.
Cracking place to go, even better with the TT.
Check the local motorsport calendar too - there might be a trial or rally on somewhere. I was on the Island for the Manx GP a couple of years ago, and one of the best days was riding mtbs round to watch half a dozen sections of the 2 day trial.
Go and watch the seals playing down at the Calf, that's nice, good cafe there too. 🙂
Call in and water my garden, if you're feeling short of something to do - I'm away in that Greece 8)
Ours is the house with the best view of Ballaugh bridge....
