This summer, our family (two adults and two 16-year-olds) are considering island hopping in Greece (probably the Cyclades if that matters). I've done it before, but that was 35 years ago (Germany had just won Italia '90). So my question is – do we just rock up to the port and buy tickets (foot passengers) as I did back then, or do tickets have to be purchased upfront (which would mean we'd have to be a bit more sorted with our accommodation dates).
Thank you
Avoid Santorini if it’s still rumbling.
Seriously though, we had this planned then holiday allowance poo pood the idea. Some of the sea journeys were the best part of 24 hours so I thought a cheap internal flight might have been more pleasant.
I thought we were going island hopping this autumn. I was suprised by the lengths of boat trips at the planning stage.
If I’ve not done it I’d be looking at Split to Dubrovnic in Croatia, booking the boats ahead. A friend said that there trip was problematic with full boats in the summer.
i thought this guy on Youtube was helpful

But we are just looking at the Cyclades so the journeys would all be relatively short (generally <1hour). Anyway, the travelling is all part of the fun!
It was the cyclades i looked at Santorini to Milos is nearly 2.5 hours and and 93 euros each. Of course some islands are closer than that. I got the scale wrong in my head compared to Croatia

Mostly much shorter than that, and arriving into a harbour is one of the great experiences of travel in Greece, as the whitewashed houses come into view, become more distinct, and you get trampled underfoot by a load of grannies carrying bags of food.

Our initial (back of a fag packet) plan is Santorini > Ios > Naxos > Paros > Mykonos and, depending on the time of day and the type of ferry, they are all around 30 to 45 minutes and around 30 Euros (some options include SeaJet ferries which can be as quick as 25 minutes but are a bit more expensive). TBF, now I have looked a bit more, it seems booking online should be fine (assuming I can book on the morning and just wander down to the port the same afternoon).
