The Putin style drift from prime minister to president, the expansion of presidential powers and erosion of freedoms seems to be coming to a head in Turkey.
Going to be interesting as a NATO member and the country's strategic position.

Turkey latest: Huge protests across the country after president's main rival jailed - BBC News
Ironically the last few years have seen quite a few things go Turkey's way regionally, geopolitically and demographically they're in a hugely strong position and they're almost certainly going to be a pivotal power in the next century.
Their internal politics remain a total cluster though.
Turkey is a tricky bedfellow with the democratic world to put it mildly but the last thing NATO and Europe want is to push it towards Russia/China so imagine that they're going to bite their lips and hope for the best.
If Turkey can ditch Erdogan peacefully, refresh it's democracy and get its' economic house in order it could be a very serious player and force for good in the world but whether it does or not is up to the Turks.
Quite heartening to see the protesters not being too badly manhandled...for now.
Without wishing to draw attention to the very witty nature of a serious topic thread header, chapeau.

And yet, across the Atlantic, minds immeasurably inferior to ours regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us…
I expect the Amber Abomination is watching what's going on in Turkey with interest.
Without wishing to denigrate a whole load of puns that will surely follow, the country referred to 'rebranded' a few years back to the spelling that is predominantly used in the country specifically to avoid comparison with the bird / a phrase that has come to mean a bit of a dud.

I note the news sites don't generally do it though, even as per link in the OP - ....protests across Turkey...etc.
I don't think Türkiye vs Turkey has quite the same connotations as Kyiv vs Kiev (or Ukraine vs The Ukraine) which all were happy to support, but it does mean the above is not a joke I'd make in front of my Türkish colleague and therefore not one I'm entirely comfortable with.
I am happy for the mods to amend the spelling in my title

I am not sure the voters have as much of a say as Erdogan just swats away any contenders to his abuse of power.
Cadet bone spur might be watching to garner ideas, but the US regime is also emboldening such moves around the world.

Maybe they’ll leave NATO and join a new club with Trumpland. Oh, and Russia.
I expect the Amber Abomination is watching what's going on in Turkey with interest. And let us pray he doesn`t say anything to make it worse ..
Musk is already putting his Thumb on the scale
Another one to bring up whenever Trumpy types start grandstanding about their 'championing' of Free Speech.

If you’ve not read any Tim Marshall books then they’re a fantastic read, exploring individual countries geopolitics and their place in the world.
In this book he goes into detail about Turkeys position. They are indeed pivotal, literally, and have always used their crucial trading position to play all sides off against each other to benefit themselves
Quite heartening to see the protesters not being too badly manhandled...for now.
That didn't last long, did it.
This is always a sign an authoritarian government is about to open meaningful dialogue with opposition groups

OFC this is exactlt the sort of Free Speach that Vance can get behind.

Musk has done his bit by taking down the Turkish opposition on X
There's an excellent book called "Age of the Strongman" which covers the links and fanboi connections among the various authoritarian regimes. Erdoğan is surprisingly prominent. I might get a copy again in the light of recent events.

Yes, well, the sort of free speech promoted so prominently by the likes of Muskrat is the sort where they get to choose what is said, while denying everyone else the right to say anything. Which is what they accuse others, ie the ‘Extreme Left’ of doing; in reality everyone who isn’t a complete Fascist.
Hasn’t stopped me from calling First Lady Elonia an asshole every chance I get - I haven’t had my Xitter account cancelled yet, anyway.
