Er, did you think it was a free thinking democracy?

See the BBC report on being arrested in North Korea, too.

No it doesn't subsidise it, they'd be acting that way regardless.

It doesn't subsidise it but it certainly implies consent.

It surprises me that people are so quick to jump into bed with the Chinese, following Brexit, given their poor human rights and environmental records.

Someone should start a petition.

Not so much consent, more that we love our cheap consumer crap more than we care about pretty much anything

We are not joining as equals. We are the junior partner. We don't get to pick the rules. ThAt said We won't get too close not because of any principles we just won't want to piss the Americans off.

Yeah, because the EU are taking a massive stand against them. 🙄

You do know Brexit has happened yet?

Suppression of protestors at the China congress? given the people I know who have been arrested and held on flimsy charges to keep them away from protesting at the G8 summits I would say we already sit on the same spectrum of suppression, maybe not as extreme, but it still exists.

Not only buying their stuff, your taxes help too.

Buying from China implies consent?

So if you own a Ford you are complicit in American drone strikes? Or perhaps if you clothes were made in Turkey you agree with their leaders policies?

I would say that when the international community doesn't agree with something then a sanction is leveled.
On a personal level there are some instances where you can take our business elsewhere but most supply chains are quite murky so informed choice is not an option.

Get this. Most of the rest of the world, outside literally a handful of western countries - are pretty shit places to be reporters.

In reality, Chinas increasing modernisation is causing younger generations to question their government - environmentalism has also become a thing within China.

You buying goods from China will slowly lead to the erosion of the CCP's grip on power.

The only other thing we care more about is our free hundreds of thousands of pounds of housing equity without caring too much that it comes at the expense of the younger generation and the poorer members of society and the wider economy.

You buying goods from China will slowly lead to the erosion of the CCP's grip on power.

There's some truth in this but autocrats tend not to give up power in a peaceful and willing manner - they crave control and power because they need it to shore up their insecure personalities
