New boiler fitted today, was an old Myson Apollo system type with a hot water tank and wired room thermostat attached. Thermostat was recently swapped to a Tado unit and extension Programmer which worked fine on the conventional system.

A new Main Baxi Combi units been installed and the plumbers saying the wired thermostat isn't compatible with the new combi system? I thought it'd be able to be plugged directly back in?

There is a junction box between thermostat and boiler, he's saying this now needs power (even though it was powered before) and that I need to get an electrician in to do the re-wire - does this sound correct or just a fob off?

I should have taken the Tado outer boxes off so he couldn't just say 'we don't have the instructions for that so didn't know what to do.....'

Apologies to any plumbers reading if I'm being a tool, I'm just trying to see where I stand before giving him a call in the morning.

I'm no plumber ..but I would be very surprised if he was putting his reputation at stake for the price of a new thermostat ..

Come to think of it we had a new one fitted last year on a Baxi Greenslave (?) ..which had a digital display ...

Is it to do with the new boiler plus regs?  Cheap way to overcome it is with a smart thermostat which could be why your old one wasn't up to it

Our Baxi combi  boiler died just before Xmas, so I got a mate to replace it with a  Viessmann condensing  one. He said  my old hardwired thermostat  wasn't compatible  and I'd also have to get an electrician to wire it up properly. Luckily for  us,  I also have a mate who's an electrian. Hope that helps

Just had a look at the wiring diagram. It looks like you can have either a regular thermostat, or a modulation thermostat for the boiler. So, a regular thermostat should work fine. See pages 34/35

Tado has options for volt free, 230ac switched or extra low voltage, so all looks 100% compatible.

Sounds like your plumber ain’t happy on the wiring side. Which if he’s not into wiring diagrams etc is understandable

I do a lot of boilers. No idea what he means, but I doubt he's having you on, as new programmers can be bought for £30, so it isnt going to earn him much if he fitted it himself.

Where are you?

Tado wiring may need to be reconfigured, but that’s all

Thanks I'm near Cardiff, I think it's the wiring that has him stumped

It's a Baxi Main so the programmer is the old circular type with the small pull out pins for each hour. I guess there must be a simple way of wiring a room thermostat into it, wired or un-wired?

I'd download the Tado instructions and do it myself, it can't be complicated. When I fitted my Nest I had to Google something due to a wiring discrepancy and found it was a common problem.

I bet he knows but didn't want the hassle/extra 30 minutes as he was off home/late for another job.

Did he have a 70s mustache and say something like 'ooh it's very stiff, can you help me with my large tool' then yes, he may have been trying to diddle you!
