Today Mrs Scape received an unsolicited SIM card through the post. It was in a plain envelope with a printed adhesive address label, all correct with forename and surname, and smudged postmarks.
On opening she found an O2 pay as you go SIM card in what looks like a perfectly genuine card packaging.
She is an EE account holder.
Is this a scam, and if so how does it work? Needless to say it hasn't been put in any devices.
Have you just busted her drug dealing operation?
Some Sims can be hacked I believe though not 100% certain.
Oh good result !
I'd hope that who she works for would have already explained that to her if she's to receive a new phone and sim for company business.
The OP sounds totally unsolicited so is indeed very suspicious.

She volunteers for Victim Support, and contacts people who have been victims of crime. So far she has always done so on her own phone with number withheld, but mentioned this in a phone meeting with one of her managers. She said she'd look into getting Mrs Scape a phone , and sent the email at the same time she posted the SIM. We've been away and Mrs Scape didn't read the email until she got back, and of course after she'd received the SIM. Presume the phone is on its way!

That's a huge security/Data protection problem. Not only for your wife's clients, but for your wife.
'Huge' probably isn't a biblicaly large enough term to describe it. Totaly illegal and wreckless might be a better way to describe it.
I'm not supprised she's 'all of a sudden' been issued with a company phone&sim since raising the question.
Pressumably she's also been issued with a locked down laptop with VPN too?
