I forget who is the STW arbiter of "is this racist" type questions but no doubt they'll be along shortly to give their ruling.

Just thought using the word 'Nip' was a bit close to the mark. (I know it's from Nippon and therefore Japanese but it just stuck out)

Maybe it's not then.. reading too much into stuff. Anyway off on my bike now

Yes.

You are DEFINITELY a racist for associating a word that can also be used as a derogatory term for Japanese people with a photograph of a Chinese gentleman.

Don a fairtrade hair shirt and start vigorously beating yourself with a rolled up copy of the Guardian.

Actually it's also the proposed title of a forthcoming ITV2 police procedural drama centred on a Japanese exchange officer, who due to a time travelling mishap, ends up being partnered with a mythical Sherwood Forest dwelling clergyman.

Well in this case the "tuck" also refers to a diving position, so quite likely that the "nip" is also deliberate given its other possible usage. I suspect someone at the sun is chuckling like a naughty schoolboy about it.

what he said above it was said to be deliberately ambiguous IMHO. I cant believe it was innocently used. Not the worst or most blatant they have ever done though.

+1 and to give people a chance to whinge about the mythical PC brigade as soon as someone says "hang on, that's not very nice is it?"

Also...

Would anyone who reads the Sun care?

+1

Not the worst or most blatant they have ever done though.

+1 also. I can think of a few already.

The use of "Tuck" to tie in with the diving context makes the "Nip" look more deliberate if anything. "Nippon Tuck" would have been safer, but might have flown over the head of Sun readers.

Believe it or not, Sun journo's aren't on the whole stupid. The phrase "Nip and tuck" is obviously chosen as it's :-

1) A well known phrase (albeit in a cosmetic surgery context)
2) Contains the word tuck, which is a diving term
3) Also contains the word nip which is a derogatory term associated with people of Asian origin, lo and behold there's a fella from said geographical locale in the pic.

So basically a clever play on words, well worth the journo's £100K salary.
