The current extractor fan in the bathroom sounds like a small hovercraft located in the ceiling. It's a goodly few years old so assuming 'technology' has advanced.

Is there a decent quiet extractor fan anyone can recommend?

Ta.

Nope. No such thing.

I quite like the noise, it helps me sleep and drowns out the ploppy noises.

Have you got space for ducting?

Well, it's upstairs bathroom with pretty much direct access to the loft void so I suppose I think I have space for ducting.

So is that extractor thingy on the outside of the house sucking air way, or in the ceiling pushing the air out?

The pic would be what you'd have on the ceiling, then the ducting and the extractor fan in a location far enough away not to disturb.

Ah, got you - so that's just a vent in effect with the noisy fan somewhere else.

For maximum quietness you need acoustic ducting. A good place to look for parts is Fantronix or your local "indoor agriculture" store.
