The last two I've bought have been awful, one that wouldn't grip the tin and the other just destroys it. I remember my parents having one when they got married and it lasted about 50 years!

Yes, there is one (maybe Oxo good grips) that unpeels the join rather than cuts. It's really good.
Butterfly can opener is your search term. They just work.

I have two different oxo good grips can openers. Both very good (for right handed people anyway).
Our OXO one is great, proper sturdy & has never failed. It'll even take the top off a corned beef can when the key snaps/goes missing.
I started a similar thread on here a couple of years ago. The search function being what it is, there's not much chance of finding it.
Anyhow, off the back of recommendations on it I bought a Khun Rikon and it's awesome. It will outlast me and just works.

I have. Cheap ones are just rubbish. Ragged cut, blunt easily, clumsy to use, go rusty, awkward to wash. We had dozens over our married life including some more expensive ones. They all eventually ended up in the bin through frustration. That Khun Rikon is a joy to use compared to the others. It feels like it will last forever and wasn't even expensive.
They are really hit and miss in my experience.. I went through two or three in sucession when I needed a new one until I found a decent one. Was a cheap one, about a fiver, maybe more but less tan a tenner IIRC in a similar style to this... works really well and had it probably 5yrs+ now.

Tescos stainless steel one (£4), that they usually have hanging along their supermarket aisles.
Mines still ploughing away. Invest in a brush and let it steep in soapy water to stop the parts from getting too grimy.

I've recently bought a Brabantia one, but it seems a bit lightweight in all honesty.

Sounds like you need a busier life. I just use the one on my pen knife which i've had since i was about 11.

Only used various knife type tin openers, such as the one on my work victorinox pen knife and the ones which i think are Canadian army issue. Never had a problem opening a can, plus you can peel an orange with them as well.

It's great there's loads of can openers that are "just" working, but I demand the best of the best! Not found it though.

I recall being introduced to a fixed blade version of that back in the early 90s. Took a while to get used to it, but worked a treat.
We use a cheap opener at the moment, but could do with something that is good for inner rim slice, not round the edge slice. Sone to both, some don't. Needs to be slim, most of the fancy ones are quite girthy.

Have had a Kuhn Rikon one for over 20 years. Still works. Although not so well with the cans that you can open with a ring-pull. Most of those though can be opened upside-down.

It slices the top off the can leaving no ragged edges to cut your self on in the recycling like the old inner rim cutting one

See, the beauty of the way the Kuhn Rikon jobbies work is that they break the seal between the can and the lid, meaning no razor sharp edges that animals might lick the night it’s out for recycling etc., and a ready-made, perfectly fitting lid for the can if you don’t want to use all the contents.
@trail_rat we too have the lantana that derek_starship mentioned. I’m competent with it. Mrsjonwe and the children (big ones who really should be able to use an advanced design) struggle with it and revert to the butterfly model and dangerous edges.
Now the issue I have is with some cans that have a low height seam (aldi - why do you do this?) - it struggles to engage or stay engaged. Any tips?
Those Kuhn Rikon openers are a step above everything else. Once you work out you need to use the little pincers to lift the lid off...

Mine is a Stellar stainless steel can opener that cost around £25 perhaps 15 to 20 years ago. Very good and solidly with only metal parts. Still look as new today. I tried to search online for the photo but couldn't find any.
Feature is similar to this one below but Stellar is much better designed and look much better.

Agreed. If you put the lid back on, you can't see the join the cut is that smooth. For a cheap kitchen gadget it's incredibly well designed and made. The bizarre thing is, we don't actually buy much tinned food, or it has ring pulls. So when we do, I get a tiny little buzz coz I get to use the Khun Rikon. Yes, my life is that sad.

Pretty sure that is because they do not cut the can. They unroll the crimped join.
