So, we’ve spent quite a bit of time in our small back garden with the four year old today and as usual his favourite spots to play in seem to be the ones the local cats like to take a dump in.

As I get the feeling we will all be spending a lot more time than normal in the garden this year I’ve started to think if there is anything I can do to encourage the cats off into someone else’s garden. Fixing the place up was on our to do list so I was wondering if there is anything anyone can recommend me To put down that cats generally like to avoid?

Ideally I think I’d like to just put turf over most of the garden but if the cats would be less likely to visit if we paved or gravelled then they could be workable alternatives. If I’d need to go to full on razor wire netting then I guess I’ll just be stuck with cleaning up when we head out.

Pepper down where the cats poo.

It really works. You don't need to do it for to long as they will find new places to crap.

Chilli flakes, paprika also work - but you can big packets of ground pepper really cheap

Scent your garden boundary with lion of the non-bar variety.

Tried lots of thing to fend them off, clear plastic bottles half filled with water, toy snakes and pepper, but no luck. As I'm in South Wales the pepper is washed away within a day

Recently installed two solar USB cat alarms on either side of the garden where they come in and slowly seems to be working. The cats sit on the fence now and seem agitated by the white noise. Still collecting the odd deposit, perhaps from the deaf cats. I use an empty bread loaf bag like a glove, grab, turn inside out and tie up. I add the task to my Tuesday night bin routine!

There’s at least four cats come into my garden and crap in it, two of them live in the bottom flat the other side of my fence, so the owner doesn’t give a toss about what his pets get up to, so long as they’re not in his flat.
I tried the cat repellent, we’ve just had the wettest February on record, so that worked well...
When I see them prowling around the patio trying to get at the food I put down for the hedgehogs I chuck a couple of those little party snap things out of the landing window, which scares them away for a bit, but maybe being at home for at least the next couple of weeks and driving the little shits out regularly they might get the message.
Which might involve the most powerful SuperSoaker I can get from Amazon. 😈

Definitely not gravel as per your first post! They love that stuff...

Cats really don't like citrus fruits, so spreading orange peel around should help.

Your neighbors ought to have the wherewithal to provide toilet facilities for their pets.

If I had my own garden, I'd just lead by example and have a tonne of sand delivered, and placed somewhere kids can't reach it. I'd consider it 'tribute' to the wee 'enforcers'.

Rats are never far from humans and they have to relentlessly work their jaws on bricks, wood and steel to stop their teeth from growing too large.

So having cats assiduously working away in all weathers to stop rats from gnawing through foundations, gas or electricity supplies isn't too much of an ask?

I like the idea of giving them something peppery/spicy to squat on, so may give that I try if I can got my hands on an appropriate food stuff still. Short term approach has been to put all the big, pointy, branches I’ve cut down today over the top of the most well used spots.

Why should they bother when all their neighbours have gardens for their pets to shit in, and feeders to attract birds for them to hunt?

Yes it is when they foul other people’s environment.

@ countzero

It's in your neighbours interests to provide their cats with toilet facilities because there's a higher chance of their cats becoming infected with tapeworm, etc, if they're cats are pooping in soil.

As a counterpoint to cats pooping in some sand at a discreet part of someone's garden, consider the certainty of rats pissing all over someone's kitchen. No thanks!

I'm not an expert on house fires, but if any rats chew through the mains, any smoke detectors are going to melt well before anyone can get out of the house.

They may not be your cats, but their concept of territory extends further than your neighbours property.

Then again there's always ferrets, mink, stoats and weasels😉

"A weasel is bigger than a stoat".

Wise words.
