Essentially, I'm looking to buy some stuff online that would require delivery. With the UK transport infrastructure to Scotland apparently currently shut down I realise that nothing will be delivered any time soon. So the question is, will everything already in the system disappear in to a black hole as a huge forgotten about backlog when things get back to normal, and should I just wait a couple of weeks before making any orders?
Also, will I ever receive any birthday presents that might have been sent over the last few days. 🙂
I would imagine online places don't have a default backlog blackhole where they give a merry up-yours to all the folk who placed an order in snowy weather.
They will send them by drone - so get ordering.
I am fairly sure they don't throw deliveries in the hedge if it snows (unless its Yodel), they will be in a queue and whilst delayed I would imagine they will be delivered on a first in, first out basis.
Not a direct answer but I have found the marketing emails this week going roughly "damn its cold. Order yourself some heavy duty warm clothing now" fairly amusing. Since chances of them turning up before it starts warming up is fairly slim.
My daily experience with carriers would lead me to surmise if there is a problem with the delivery on day one your chances of ever receiving things in useable condition are around 40%.
Of all the things which get lost/damaged etc, the huge majority had "delivery problems" on day one.
Mass backlogs are unusual and i can only imagine will significantly reduce the chances of you receiving anything.
Your retailer won't just ignore you. The carrier will likely frustrate you, a lot.
Thanks for the replies. I'll probably just wait, or possibly forget and save some money!!

That's pretty much my concern. The retailer will legitimately say that they passed the goods on to the carrier, then that's where the fun starts. 🙂
I've ordered about 12 things today for delivery tomorrow, it won't arrive tomorrow, although a custom built PC that was dispatched from Portsmouth yesterday arrived in Cardiff this morning!
Logistics really is a chain, things move from point a to b to c etc - when it stops, it just stops wherever it is and is first out the door (well, give or take) whenever things start moving again. Christmas is a bit of an exception because the courier firms are greedy and take on a lot more work than they can handle and stuff does sometimes fall into a hole for a day or two.
The only real danger at the moment is your stuff actually getting stuck on a lorry in a drift somewhere.
