....Metallica?

I'm certainly no hardcore fan, but can you beat the likes of 'One','Enter Sandman' and 'Nothing Else Matters'?

Led Zep
They [metalicca] have longevity but so do Iron Maiden and Cliff so that is no measure of greatness

Mackem - it wasn't a definitive question, for the very reason that I've not researched them fully.

More of a searching question?

I would struggle to say better than Led Zep or AC/DC but I've been hearing a couple of records recently that float my boat. I may use the itunes voucher my son sold me to sample this new musicical suggestion.

Nah, Metallica don't do much for me. More from an indie background so I'd rather have Queens of the Stoneage or the Smashing Pumpkins for a rock fix.
Do like a bit of AC/DC but all a bit same-ish.

I have, of late, very much enjoyed a bit of System of a Down. I thought they were one of those bands I hate, like Korn, Limpbizkit etc. Then heard 'Terracotta Pie' on a biking video and was hooked!

"Ride the Lightning, best Metallica album ever"

Assuming you disqualify Master of Puppets for being unfairly good.

I suppose of the huge rock bands Metallica could be the best... They slumped really badly but seeing them again last year it was obvious they're back in the game, so much more energy and passion to it. I try and be cynical about Metallica but when they're good, they're very good.

The Wildhearts are better though, when they exist.

AC/DC
GnR
Sabbath
Maiden
Queensryche
Pearl Jam

GnR: seriously? Slash is a good guitarist, but Axl Rose a better frontman than Hetfield? Perlease! That awful strangled caterwauling sets my teeth on edge.
And as for Queensryche and Pearl Jam, well...
AC/DC are good, but the only band anyone's listed that are better than Metallica are Zeppelin, and as I've seen both live, as well as Sabbath, Purple, QOTSA, Sisters Of Mercy, Killing Joke and Anthrax, among many, I think I have a reasonable perspective.

I plagarised "disposable heroes", with a few tweaks, for my a-level English. I got away with a B!

20 yrs on, still listen to metallica when I'm doing weights or roadbike now.

Garage days. Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets. great stuff. got bored of them after And Justice for All.

Metallica are one of those bands I could never get into. IMO the "best" rock band was Thin Lizzy with their superior guitar riffs, harmonies and just great songs. Led Zep and ACDC are fine, but I can do without the screechy annoying singing.

Metallica are certainly up there. I saw them last year in Belfast and was amazed by how long they spent talking to fans and distributing gifts after the performance. I saw Saxon at Download and they produced one of the best kick ass performances of the day, if they'd stuck at it they'd be up there too. For me Blue Oyster Cult are still the best rock band ever ever ever.

You might as well say Nazareth (who my dad liked)(actually, he also likes Metallica)(he's 72 btw).

May I retort?
Axl is an amazing front-man - one of the most charismatic frontmen around, with a great voice to boot (although if you think he caterwauls, then that is your opinion). And with songs like Paradise City, Sweet Child o' Mine, Patience, November Rain, You Could Be Mine, Civil War and even Street of Dreams (from Chinese Democracy) they are, IMO, far superior to Metallica. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind them (I have the Black album and Master of Puppets) but I just don't find them as vital as other rock/metal bands. IMO.

And as far as 'I have been to x, y, z gigs... Let's just say I have been to a few.

Funnily enough, I was (and still am) listening to the Wildhearts whilst I read that.

One of the most under rated bands ever.

They were contenders but it all went horribly wrong, Load, St Anger and then the Some kind of monster doco, saw them at their best on the Ride the Lightening tour, they played one date at the Lyceum in London. Maybe I am getting old but they just dont do it for me at all anymore.

See, that means "I prefer them to Metallica". There's no "superiority" is there?
The only FACT is that Axl Rose is a complete and utter arsehole and for that reason alone I wouldn't listen to his "caterwalling" if I was paid £10 a minute.

Metallica haven't done a decent album since black, in 1990.
Oh and Slayer south of Heaven FTW, although God Hates us all is on ANGRY album too.
GNR for getting down with the rock chicks, lol.

I guess it all depends on your definitions of "better" and "rock" 😉

CountZero, much as I love The Sisters Of Mercy, the current live incarnation is little better than Eldritch doing karaoke. I will always be able to enjoy a New Model Army gig though

Its gotta be AC/DC

Just got back from a lads ski trip to Austria. Spent a fantastic night in a small Australian themed bar near Kitzbuhel, listening to a brilliant Geordie band doing covers of stuff like "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "You Shook Me All Night Long".

Ahh, pure heaven 🙂

As much as I love Metallica, they haven't released anything of real note since Master of Puppets. And Justice For All is a decent album ruined by awful production. The Black album is over hyped and over blown beyond belief with only a couple of tracks that have stood the test of time. Anything released after that isn't worth commenting on.

They're still decent live but if it's a teary eyed nostalgia trip I want, there are better bands out there still on the go.

See, that means "I prefer them to Metallica". There's no "superiority" is there?

But how is that 'superiority' measured? Surely it can only ever be IMO?

There are plenty of people out there that think any rock/metal is gash and that JLS are superior.

Does this measure superiority?
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction - 28 million copies sold worldwide
Metallica - Metallica (ie, The Black Album) - 22 million copies sold worldwide

Then of course
AC/DC - Back in Black - 49 million copies sold worldwide

Led Zep - I always struggled to get into them that much, despite my best efforts.

Kashmir is wondrous though.

But for me, if I had to listen to one metal band and no other for the rest of my life it would be Black Sabbath (even some of the Dio stuff).

Such variety, such creativity. I think they remain a very under-rated band.

I do really like AC/DC too, but I think I would struggle after a while because, as stated already on this thread, they can be a bit samey.

(IMO 😉 )

Charlie from Busted left to form the band Fightstar. I became aware of this fact having picked up their album, liked it and brought it to work, at which point people tried to take the piss out of me. I recommend giving them a listen

Just tell me that it had dumped 2 foot of fresh the night before. That you had first tracks down powder field after powder field under blue bird skies in the morning and then you hit the park busting sweet slow stylish backside 360s all afternoon !!

I'm not jealous ... the thought of that just makes me smile sooo much.... think that would be pretty much my perfect day... yeah with my kids whooping every time I stomped a landing.... we can but dream..... Happy days

As a live act Metalica certainly are up there with anyone I've ever seen, although Nuclear Assault were easily the loudest. RATM were also superb live.

As for recorded studio material I think The Foo Fighters are the best for consistent high quality albums even with all the different members.

Metallica are great, they are definitely up there as the biggest and best of all time. I think only Led Zeppelin (for sheer genius) and AC/DC (for longevity) equal them.

Foo Fighters and QOTSA are also great but probably need a few more years yet

The correct answer is Velvet Revolver.

Of the 6cds in the changer, those two never come out. Although there's that many votes for ACDC, I think they need to go in for a bit.

Never liked Foo Fighters - all very samey - but like Dave G and loved Nirvana. Similarly I find QOTSA very camp, but love Kyuss.

As for Metallica, I think ...And Justice For All is one of the greatest rock albums ever, but after that they went seriously downhill IMHO. The Black Album is a very good 'rock' record, but not really 'Metallica'. And why Enter Sandman is apparently the best rock song ever still escapes me.

I think when they get it right FF are a great rock band, but they've done too many albums that sound the same. The snippets they've released for the new one sound promising though.

FWIW I never really *got* Metallica.

was an amazing front-man

Well I saw them in Manchester late last year and enjoyed it. Yes, he didn't come on stage till 10.30pm or whatever, but he was still there at 1.30am and put on a great show (IMO)

(And I have seen them about six times in total with differing line-ups, either at their gigs or at festivals). His voice was the cleanest and most impressive at the Leeds Festival when Buckethead was on guitar.

Pity he looks like Mick Hucknall now though.

I'm going to see "Adler's Appetite" soon.

Having seen Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds, and Velvet Revolver, this will complete my 'set' of having seen ex-GnR-members from the only line-up that mattered 😉

Pity he looks like Mick Hucknall now though

😀

See, that was a gig and a half... And it should have been rubbish but on the night, they were amazingly good. Nunchucks and all (also had the brilliant comedy of Axl getting annoyed at missing their start time because of the Prodigy's slow stage change)

OTOH this year at Reading was like watching an old fighter who still thinks he can compete with the new boys getting knocked out with the first punch. Horrible.

Glad it wasn't just me thinking that. I was at the just back from the very front on the left. Was given a fake £10 in change at the bar just behind. Sat with people burning cardboard to keep warm towards the end 🙂
