definately.

Interact with others, sometimes posting stuff to show off how nice your life is, sometimes to ask for advice, sometimes just to sell stuff? CHECK.

Emormous black hole for productivity? CHECK

Good fun? CHECK

Mostly pointless? CHECK

Of course it is.

Sometimes I say 'I read on social media that...' rather than 'I read on Singletrack' because I imagine it makes me sound less of a loser..

On the flip side, there is generally more intelligent discourse available on here than on the old faceache, which is why I've binned that in favour of this. (I didn't appear to have very many inteligent 'friends'). Maybe I should have been more picky, but it wouldn't be very 'social' media with only three other users...

Social Media used to be called User Generated Content 10 years ago so STW overall may not be but the forum most definitely is.

STW, however, is a cut above the rest due to the quality of its membership. Naturally đŸ™‚

I do learn a hell of a lot on here, actually, there's some real knowledge amongst all the opinion and a real spirit of compassion when people have proper problems...

I think the yanks call it Web 2.0 a site of user generated content rather than social media per se - but yeah, it's a type of social media.

Not so much here, but on that den of arseholes Pistonheads I really love the irony of "Mr. twenty thousand post count" bemoaning social media and how you'd never catch them on it.

There's a phrase I've not heard in years. There's not enough gradients and high gloss buttons for it to be Web 2.0 though.

Personally, I think that the lack of networking tools on a forum mean it is not 'Social Media' in the web 2.0 sense. I would say 'internet community' is a truer definition for a forum. I would personally say broadcasting is a fundamental aspect of social media, and why the term media is used. Forums are more discussion based, and why I would use the word community. This fundamentally makes forums a much healthier and productive environment, another reason i would say they are disctinct from social media. Social media is essentially ego based and hierachy driven. By experience on forums, exceptions aside, they are much less about the individual. I am often astonished by the depth and breadth of conversation on this forum. It is a very often a very heart warming place. I think the west coast hippies who embarked on defining he internet would see a marked difference between the two ideas.
