Both in (along with Tokyo) the very top tier of Global cities. No doubt London is an amazing city, spent loads of time there as wife is from there, but always had an idea that New York is just that bit 'better', though never having been there that's just my perception from various types of media over the years.

Which is better and why?

New York lacks something by way of an actual history, for starters.

I would rate them as ...

1. NY
2. Tokyo
3. London

😀

Theres not too much to choose between them. New York is cleaner and food is cheaper, people talk to one another on the tube (or whatever they call it there - Pipe maybe?, something like that anyway).

Daytime drinking is more acceptable in London, (its hardly even possible in NY), and people don't talk to you or even make eye contact and for some people thats a positive.

But on balance they're much of a muchness.

It only costs me £40 to get to London, New York and Tokyo are way more expensive for a start!

Why does everything have to come down to which is best?

They have strengths and weaknesses, and I have enjoyed time in both.

New York is cleaner

Maybe things have changed but I found some parts very dirty when I worked out there - around China Town for instance.

New York lacks something by way of an actual history, for starters.

The history of art and the history of music might disagree with you, not to mention the numerous socio-cultural and counter-culture histories.

The natives (link) might also disagree.

I can't remember where I read it, but in terms of number tourist visitors, London is first with New York second. But I wonder if that's due to it's proximity to Europe.

That doesn't necessarily make it better though.

I suspect if you asked someone from New York they'd say "I'd love to visit London, but New York is the best!!!!...YEAH...USA, USA, USA....woooo!!!!"

Or something similar.

I don't agree with that completely...it has history, it's just not as old.

Ellis Island museum is really interesting - it was my favourite part of a week in NY a few years ago.

Three-fish, the natives didn't actually establish New York State, New York City, or Manhattan, I doubt very much if many of those historic tribes were still there when the city was being built. First Nations history is clearly not the same as the history subsequently imposed by European incomers.
Many First Nations people helped build it, though, working the high steel.
And as far as history of art and music are concerned, NY may have the institutions, but I think 1000 or more years of music, art and literature in Britain and Europe rather trumps the 300 or so that the U.S. can manage.

Why does everything have to come down to which is best?

People who live in London/Tokyo/New York probably don't really care which is best, are too busy enjoying life there and if they have visited or lived there they like them all for different reasons (I know I do)
Trying to point score/rate them is for provincial types or those from Sydney who think their city is second only to Utopia.

New York. It's further from Paris.

So the modern history of NY is completely invalidated because it's, well... I'm not sure why? You're going to have to explain. What do you mean it "trumps"?

Have to say of the three I really don't like Tokyo. Massively crowded, 3hrs from airport to the city and I hate the food. I'd put Hong Kong and Singapore above Tokyo as Asian cities, personal preference.

I have lived and worked in New York for three years and currently live in London having worked here for 20 years. Each is different and have different strengths and weaknesses. I think London is more cosmopolitan and more relaxed. New York has a buzz for sure and you can ski or be in the hills in the summer in 2 to 3 hours. I'd be happy in either. Off to NYC for 5 days tomorrow.

New York is better at dealing with snow

I imagine the climate in New York with its bigger contrast between seasons (i.e. winter is cold summer is hot) makes it better to live than London which is often grey and wet

I prefer New York- it is cleaner, as a general rule less intimidating, the people are more friendly and much easier and more logical to get about in.

They's both OK for a quick visit but the sense of relief when leaving either is amazing.

Lived in both NY and London, and spent a lot of time in Tokyo, much prefer living in Hong Kong.

Having lived in both cities for just over 6 years i feel slightly qualified to comment on this.

They are both amazing, but very very different cities. I could write an essay but i won't. Visit / live in both then make your mind up.

Not sure how you'd define 'better' as an objective measure, but fwiw I really really like NY and would actively avoid living in London. Despite New York being more densely populated I left like it had more space, the subway runs all night and Taxis are cheap.

Barcelona FTW.

All major cities should have a beach.

Both massively overrated. Of the two I prefer London.

So here what you've done is open by saying you are qualified to comment on the topic.

You then followed up by not providing any comment on the topic and telling everyone to "make their own mind up".

Super. Absolutely super.

Melbourne tops LDN any day. Not got to NYC yet. Hopefully next year.
