Some months ago my brother-in-law had a chip pan fire which did considerable damage to his kitchen, he claims that his insurance company won’t pay out because he was sober and should have known better (he also claims that if he’d been drunk then the insurance would have paid up because he wasn’t in control of the situation).
Is there any truth in his claims or (as I suspect) is he talking bollox and trying to hide the real reason the insurance won’t pay?
Drunk or not accidents happen, Insurance companies should know this and therefore pay up no matter what.
Unless they think foul play!!
Theres more to this story than meets the eye.
maybe he doesn't have insurance, or has missed payments?
Poppycock story 🙄
If thats true then insurance company are saying accidents only happen when you're pished?
When my mum had similar happen, she was deffo sober and they still paid out!
offer to assist him with the claim?
Liar liar!
is he asking you for money?
I used to work for an insurance company and this just doesn't ring true. Trust your instinct, there's more to this than he's saying...
was he actually insured?
Yep, something not right here. Fire insurance is there for precisely this type of event.

Liar, liar
Chip pan fire.
No - he's telling the truth. It's the same for car insurance. Unless you're mullered they won't pay out if you have an accident.
It's the strangest thing I ever heard.
Well, not really, but its still pretty odd. In claims its usually "your quick enough to take the money but don't like paying it out" we hear most of.
Fadda, are you an insurance Jedi?
could of been because he didnt use crinkle cut chips ?
Mrs PPs mum had a chip pan fire, and she was paid up no problem. Sober and everything!
He's talking shyte.
My money is on 'not insured' TBH
that burning smell is his pants if you ask me
Complete rubbish, not even a good lie. Not your problem unless he's asking something of you tho.
Thanks everyone, It's as I suspect and he's lying through his teeth and has either not payed for the insurance or there's something else (the insurance co. may suspect foul play). I thought it was odd when he claimed he was sober and not stoned!
He's not asked for money from us, but as he's my wifes 'little brother' I want to get my facts right before I start trying to work out how much shite he's in! 🙄
Don't ya just love family!
They suspect a deliberate fire maybe? Just a thought
christmas will be fun though, wont it? 🙂
Not deliberate fire, but the insurance co. may have refused to pay due to the state of the house, I estimate he's knocked at least £50k off the value in under 2 years (it's a propper state)!
Christmas'll be fine as we're going to MY Mum's this year! 8)
State of the house won't have anything to do with it.
If he has paid his permium he is entitled to be put back into the same position he was before the claim. (less his agreed excess) Asuming that it's a valid claim.
I suspect that he isn't insured.
Do people actually still have/use chip pans? I don't think I have seen one in use for 25 years.
Why do you care or listen or spend time listening to your Brother? time is money! money is bike gear! 😉
i have a chip pan...only use it for falafel and poppadoms though
Is he pocketting the money to buy drink and drugs then?
Might be an excessive claim adding a few little 'extras' into the claim.
Just tell your brother-in-law you have a mate that specialises in insurance claim disputes and he'll do you a favour if he gives you the policy/claim ref details to pass on.
A friend many years ago told me that his mum used to wear her husbands crash helmet when using the chip pan or pressure cooker.
I'd love to think that's true.
Next time I see him i'm gonna offer to sort it out for him and find out exactly what's happening.
The reason I care is that the lazy ****t isn't working so us (tax payers) and his mother are paying his mortgage and he's spending all his time pissed and stoned while his mother's working herself into an early grave, if it was just me I'd not care but my wifes worried.
This is why I keep a bottle of Rum, next to the chip pan, in case I torch the house.
Insurance have paid up.
He's spent to money on crack and whores.
Is it not mandatory to have buildings insurance as part of your mortgage arrangements? Sure it was for our first mortgage, but now that I think about it our current one just strongly recommended it.
Liking the 'if I was drunk they'd have paid out' line. FFS - that's practically a cry for help.
Maybe they paid out and he spent the money on something he does not want to admit to?
It's sounding like he's taken the insurance policy money of his mum and spent it, I reckon... 🙁
Liking the 'if I was drunk they'd have paid out' line. FFS - that's practically a cry for help.
It sounds almost like 'they said if I was an illegal immigrant then they would have paid out'. 😛
Sounds like utter bullshit to me.
