Hopefully she's been paying her £5 a month to that company that Parky advertises, so her family won't be saddled with the cost of the funeral.

If she is retiring, she could have given the royal mint the heads-up so they could have held back on the new £1 coin.

Perhaps she has unilaterally declared a people's republic?

I assume she has the power to do that?

Perhaps she is announcing that she is reclaiming North America.

Either than, or it's a Prince Harry shotgun wedding.

We've passed the 8am deadline for a death announcement and I'm sure Chris Evans is as perky as normal, so it's a bit of a mystery really. Her Maj also would not make any meaningful announcements on abdication etc during a general election campaign.

I reckon it's a bit of this.

I noticed that. Some verified US journalists were offering their condolences to Liz.

I guess people just love to be first.

Massive cutting back in their duties would be my guess. Surprised they didn't do it 10 years ago

Palace say Phil and Liz are okay.

Must be something urgent though, they don't like doing anything in a rush and a big announcement on the day of local elections would be considered 'bad form', it's have Republicans spitting feathers about damaging democracy.

Could there be another ‘national holiday’ on the cards? Weather is fairly decent at the moment and I’ve still got fond memories of the last ‘Royal Wedding’ I think I took 3 days leave from work and had nearly 10 days off or something, did some miles that week!

Announcement expected at 1000.

BBC saying the meeting of Buckingham Palace staff is at 10am. No suggestion of a public announcement.

4th of May- first day of servant hunting season, they're just getting all the staff together to announce details of this year's cull.

(It's good for the overall health of the herd. All you handwringing townies who've never lived in a palace won't understand)

I'm surprised that needed an urgent meeting and staff coming from all over the gaff to sit-in.

Do they not have e-mail?

He's decided he can't compete with Tory politicians on 'being rude to foreigners' any more so has decided to hang up his gloves.

correct - I was hopeful we'd have an empire wide royal policy statement on disks for roadies, maybe Phil' can devote a bit more time to youtube vids and come up with a proclamation before tottering of to a shed in one of the estates

Retirement's more than cakeable, it's got to be a bacon butty event at least.

Jim: [consoling Bart] What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? "Marry my daughter"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons

At least the Ladies and Foreigners are spared embarrassment from now on.

Just read a bit of that Wikipedia page about operation London Bridge. Regarding this...

A footman would pin a dark-edged notice to the gates of Buckingham Palace. At the same time, the palace website would display the same notice.[1] Parliament would be recalled. If possible it would meet within hours and the Prime Minister would address the House of Commons.
What happens if she kicks it before the general election? At the moment, there is no House of Commons.

Then we'd stick a bit of wood up her back like in El Cid and carry on as usual til after the election

I wonder who will get the Parker pen, I can see a drama of Shakespearean magnitude erupting over that.

according to the beeb..

The duke carried out 110 days of engagements in 2016, making him the fifth busiest member of the royal family, according to Court Circular listings.

at the age of 95 - got to give him some credit for that i suppose

Yep- tbh I'm anti-monarchy, in this day and age I think it's fairly absurd but you've got to hand it to Liz and Phil, they see it as a two way street- you're queen for life, comes with huge privilege but means you keep on queening til you can't.

Agreed, 95 is a proper age to keep getting in and out of cars, shaking all those unwashed hands, eating egg and cress sandwiches then drinking gallons of tea, then popping off home for a knees up and a Gin.

Good on him, many would love to be as fit as him at his age.

One last photo, a group photo from an era known for its provocative spirit.

I believe it can be quite tough on the knees but keeps your thighs quite firm.
