I've been climbing at the same place since not long after it opened, a couple of years ago. It's only small, run by a couple who basically put all their time into it. I get on really well with them and to be honest it's made a big difference to my mental health.

Is it weird to give them a card with a twenty in it as a kinda thank you? I'm actually in a position where I ca afford this for once but I don't know if it's a bit condescending (it's definitely not meant like that). Thy don't have a tips jar on the counter or anything.

As a former wall worker I would say there's nothing wrong with that.

What they said, nice thing to do.

I always think that if you are thinking about doing it, you should. They must have done something for you to appreciate them above and beyond the normal fees so why not show gratitude for it?
We need a LOT more of this in this crazy messed up world, and as a ex retail employee it can turn around a really crappy work situation as it happens so rarely.

Give them a present rather than 20 quid, a bottle of wine or climbing book. A gift shows appreciation better than a tip which IMO is rather impersonal in the scenario you describe.

If they don't drink or like wine (like me) the first option is pointless, and I would expect someone running a climbing wall to be the person most likely to have read a lot of climbing books already!!

Nothing wrong with that, go for it, but I'm with MSP, a nice bottle of something maybe?

Think that would be a lovely thing to do. Is the wall in East Sussex by any chance??

Do they have staff? If so, I could see the gift going in a collective pot to be shared amongst them. If it's just the owners, then a gift. If you don't think they're drinkers, then there's loads of really nice foodstuffs around right now.

I remember trying to tip a shop that had really saved my holiday with a pair of snowboard boots. They wouldn't let me tip them at all. They didn't mind one little bit when I came by the next day with beers.

I see nothing wrong with that.

Mrs_oab had to cancel her hair cut this week - and we have sent payment anyway to her hairdresser to say 'thank you' and see her in the new year.

Easy to ascertain with a bit of chit-chat about what they're doing for Xmas/NY.

"I won't be drinking much this year, what about you?"

Sounds a bit Partridgesque, just give em the cash.

No staff, just the owners (and it's in Hull, Mad Volume if anyone knows it).

A gift would be my first choice if I knew them well enough, but I don't - and I know I hate getting pointless gifts that just end up on the shelf or being passed on.

Reckon I'll stick to cash, thanks all.

Cash and 'to buy yourselves a drink' in the card.

Cash and ‘to buy yourselves a drink’ in the card.

Back in the day when most men wore jackets Tommy Cooper used to tip by saying 'have a drink on me' as he shoved a teabag into their top pocket. He didn't need to be there to see the punchline when they took it out some time later

Is it weird, a little bit

Is it wrong, not in the slightest.

Every year I used to take my local KTM dealer a case of beer. I don't really use them now, but I still get made very welcome when I go in.

A lovely gesture OP. Just give the cash with a card. Cash comes in useful for a business.

Back when I worked in retail motor trade any gift or thought was hugely appreciated.

Don't honestly mean to sound preachy if it was a box of biscuits or a tenner both meant exacly the same as it just showed your work had been noticed.....

You're expressing gratitude and they'll love it so much - well done. The world needs more positivity at the moment 👍

Another 👍 from me. Doesn’t matter what you give, it’s nice to be appreciated.
