Following on from the thrilling ashes test match this is something that I have thought about for a while . The umpires are being embarrassed as every decision that they make is subject to video scrutiny and they often have to overturn them . Also there was the rank bad decision to give Stokes not out LBW wit England needing 2 runs to win which cost the Aussies the match . Also what is it with umpires call when reviewing LBW decisions , either it was hitting or not . Let the bowling side appeal to the video umpire every time they think they have got a batsman out , if correct then the batsman walks if not then 10 runs to the batting side .

Nope.  If VAR in football gets it right people still moan.

Got to keep the human element, it's part of the game and always has been. That's why the Aussies accept that decision.

I think they are OK with them.

Nothing wrong with judgement; not everything can be proved right or wrong. If you think you have been robbed, you play on. It's how you tell who is a sportsman, and who is a big baby

I have thought the same about line judges in tennis. How quick is the Hawkeye system? Could the whole thing be automated for any matter of fact decision?

They should introduce vampires instead.

The only sport in the world that could be actually be livened up  a bit by the undead.

Would we then need to build a second computer, even more powerful than the first, to review the decisions that the first one had made while pundits sit around criticising the coding of the algorithms rather than talking about the game?

Lyons dropping the ball cost the Aussies the match as did calling the VAR for a decision that was confirmed right by the umpire which often is.

Spectator sports are just theatre. Umpires and referees add to it and a bit of controversy and needle is what makes you talk afterwards. If it was all automated it would be dull.

RM had it.

If the bowler pilled up his jumper, sunnies and hat at the non strikers end and then a ball being thrown back in got stuck in a hat or hit an errant sleeve and deflected away from the stumps......

Why not just do away with cricket altogether and build more hospitals instead !

A hospital on the Oval?

Would it need to be Oval shaped?

1) Reviews show that umpires get most of their decisions correct.
2) Ball tracking isn't infallible - see below
3) The Stokes non-lbw may actually have been the correct decision - it flicked his front pad first and it's not clear that this was picked up by the ball tracking. Certainly not as cut and dried as it first appeared.

You could argue that any number of bits of bad play cost the Australians the match but the umpiring howler was out of their control, bad fielding and bowling wasn't .

I believe there's a rule for this based on having a helmet behind the wicket keeper. 5 runs if it is hit.

This is cricket we're talking about, not STW.

They’ll never do away with umpires, cricket is far too traditional for that. I like the review system it adds a different dimension and the limit of two reviews brings in its own element of tactics as displayed at Headingley. The madness of reviewing a LBW that clearly pitched outside leg lost Australia the match. Brilliant! 😊

If they had saves a VAR call then it would have been reviewed they made a bad call on another decision where the umpire was right.

Not a chance it will ever happen, as has been already said, tradition. We can't even get a 1030 start on day 2 if you lose a full day for weather in this country.
