I live in rented property and the past 2 months I've heard rats in the cavity walls and in the roof (never inside though) The landlord came in and put a hatch in the kitchen to put some poison in but it's done nothing.

Laast night I had a look around the side of the house and saw this fairly substantial hole which i covered up

If i look down the hole I can see all the way to the end of the building behind the fasica board. Presumably this shouldn't be like this?

no, shouldn't be. suggest they spray some expanding foam or something in there.

rats will get past what you've got there.

Not sure what rats are like with expanding foam, but when we filled in a crack in a drain with cement we were told to put shards of broken glass in, to stop the.m clawing it out. Persistent little buggers apparently

Screwed up chicken wire then pack in a load of strong cement. If there's a hole that you can get a pencil through, they can get their snout through and start munching it wider!

yea.. the clothes are temporary. I just wondered if this is shoddy workmanship? Seems strange I can see right inside

From experience I can tell you that rats will eat straight through expanding foam so you'll need something more permanent than that.

As for the work, I would have said that it was shoddy and i wouldn't have tolerated it.

When I say tolerable I mean from a structural perspective.

Look at why the rats are attracted to the area, are there any piles of rubbish in the locale?

I'd put chicken wire and expanding foam in there - 5 minute job and will keep them out for a while.....

ask your landlord to get a rodent killer and use plant pots for plants

fair point, and I agree structurally it's probably fine.

cheers people.. Landlord is going to look at it tomorrow

I'd like the little sods dead and out of there.. preferably not dying in the cavities and leaving the place stinking

Can't see any rubbish nearby
