To have a pre freeze dried camping meal that doesn't taste like lumpy sawdust in a bag.

The Decathlon chicken curry promised so much but failed to deliver.

Are any of the bagged ready to go things actually nice?

@Merak Try the Taster Pack. 4 half-size meals for 15 quid.

Real Turmat meals I've found are decent enough. They're very pricey though - Norwegian company but you can get them easily enough in the UK.

Summit to Eat are also nice and a bit less pricey. They have a freeze dried veggie chilli which I really like, as well as a macaroni cheese (don't put in as much water as they say in the latter (and remove the desiccant packet unlike I did)).

Tbh though if I am in a position where I am eating a freeze dried meal it's usually in a state of hunger and everything tastes like the finest food possible...so pinch of salt etc.

Sounds grim. I assume you'll be no-where near civilisation where you can carry real food etc or go to a pub ?

We're bike packing at weekend. Main food stops will be pubs/cafe's.

@fossy

I'm going to do the Pictish Trail this month. The bit from Thurso is pretty remote. I could take some ginsters but I fancied a ready to go hot meal which actually tasted nice via a jetboil.

Funnily enough (well, sort of) only at lunchtime I've just bought myself two Firepot packs to put in stock in the gear box. We'll see what they're like in due course.

The acceptable, ie quite tasty, alternative for me are the Wayfarer packs. Heavier cos they're a ready made 'wet' portion, and don't need hydrating, but can be heated by just dropping in a pan of boiling water for a few mins, eg while a bag of  rice cooks. Not so great if you need to carry several days worth of them, granted.

Daughter uses Wayfarer ones from Mountain Warehouse. Usually on offer. Quite heavy to carry but tasty enough to keep a teenage girl happy on DofE Gold last weekend

The firepit ones are ok.

If you are using a jetboil your cooking options will be quite limited, I've got a very slightly heavier stove and a mess tin for this reason, I can do pasta in it, I can simmer, etc. worth the very slight weight penalty

You can do couscous in a jetboil, and add whatever you like to it

I'm a Firepot fan too - the Orzo Bolognese is a favourite.

Pasta (quick cook if you are worried about gas use), pesto and parmesan (grated or shavings).  Beats any rehydrated meal.

Going ultra light just take ramen or smash and add some dried sausage and / or cheese.

Also custard to eat with whatever biscuits etc. are left at the end of the day.
