I love reading the complaints of folk, who pay nothing for this website ,about how crap it is.

It's like piggy backing on to your neighbours wifi and then complaining to them that it is too slow and then asking them to upgrade for you as it is a bit of a pain to use.

Does mumsnet have premium content and/or premier subscribers?

You'd think STW would notice that - I live in the next valley from them!

What exactly was "bollocks" in what I said?

I was banned for 3 days for commenting on the magazine layout.

You said you were banned for "constructive criticism." It's before my tenure so I had to look back, but as far as I can see that's bollocks on two levels.

a) your criticism wasn't constructive, it amounted to 'the magazine isn't very good', and b) it appears to me that you weren't banned for criticising, constructive or otherwise, you were banned for ignoring warnings (after being given Mark's direct dial to discuss your issues).

Junkyard - it's nothing like that at all. Pinching your neighbours wi-fi is taking something that isn't yours.
STW is giving an option, free with ads or pay to remove them. Pushing people off the site or into a sub by making the free option horrible to use isn't a great advert for the site at all.

That's not what happened and i remember it clearly. I posted into a thread which was discussing the latest issue of the magazine. I wasn't warned, just banned straight away. I think I may have been given a phone number when I was banned to discuss things but not beforehand.
I wasn't warned at all. I didn't go on the site for a long time afterwards and cancelled my magazine sub as a result because I was so annoyed at being treated in that way. I think I've bought one issue since.

I do agree tough, these pop up ads that appear on mobile devices are putting me off somewhat. I've shut STW down more then once because of them. They REALLY should get shot of them.
Handily, I use a Mac at home which kindly removes all ads for me.

The way STW is going is like walking into a shop and having someone ask you if you will be buying something when you walk in. If you say yes and pay a deposit they leave you alone. If you say you are just having a look a staff member is tasked with following you around and shouting at you to buy something or leave.

That isn't the way I managed my large DIY store I worked in, it just doesn't work. 😉

You absolutely were, I've just read it. Maybe you didn't receive it, I've no way of knowing that I'm afraid.

Anyway. In other news, I've just spent browsing the forum without being logged in to see what the fuss is about.

Stock Chrome browser on Android. Anecdotally, I can't seem to replicate the issues, it's fine for me.

the one at the bottom of iphone is a bit annoying, but it disappears for me after you hit the x a couple of times. The ads down the sides of the screen are OK anyway.

It waaaaayyyy better than a lot of chatrooms.

Do STW accept PayPal for subscription payments? Or National Express tickets? Or, maybe some Reiss Vouchers? I'd consider subscribing if any of the above methods worked.

Well, I can't work it out.

I've just reverted to the stock Android (HTC?) browser, turned off the pop-up blocker setting, enabled JavaScript, and I've been browsing the site logged out. And I still can't replicate the issue. It's very odd.

To be fair, it doesn't happen every time I use the site either. Like the auto open the ****ing App Store issue. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

Anyone seen the new season collection from Reiss? It's fabulous.

Not doing it now on mine either

Perhaps you have fixed it?

Perhaps you should post up your mobile number and we can text you when it happens 😈

This is not very subtle code for "there really isn't a problem everyone".

But, there is. Or maybe everyone is just pranking the forum.

For whatever reason, the problems come and go. A few days ago, the STW add that runs down both sides wasn't working, and the left hand ad covered the threads. This is on a desktop, running Win7 and Chrome.
Now ok. I haven't done anything, no clearing of cookies, turning on ad blockers etc.

That £1.49 could buy a pack of £1.49 price labels.

Mleh I may get a wee bit annoyed by folk who get something for nothing moaning about how poor it is - I would just say it would be betterer if you paid you free loading **** so think yourself lucky you just got the freeloader bit 😉

This thing you do for nothing its just not good enough

I know you just spend two hours of your free time helping me for no reward but

I am not sure what they want

A free P and a reach round?
Subscribers to pay more so they could get a better free service?
EDIT: trout posted whilst I was ranting and that is fairly unusable even for free

Trout, I see the same very often. No problem with ads at all, in fact some have even led me down interesting avenues, but as per your image above, some of the current batch of ads are, regardless of the advertising intent, rendering the site utterly borked from a functional perspective.

I get exactly the same layout as trouts post above. It's crap but bearable on an iPad, just need to refresh until the layout sorts itself out. The pop up national express ad that I seem to constantly get on my phone is annoying enough that I no longer bother looking at the site on there.

Ads pay for the site. Fine, it needs paying for. But STW does seem to have some dodgy ads. Fairly often when I visit the site I get a pop up dialog box with something along the lines of "You have a virus". I even get it when I travel, but in whatever local language. This is on a new Android phone and my old one, so I don't think it's malware. Perhaps you need to check out who is placing ads on the site?

Yep see exactly what Trout and chip have posted. Wish I was tetchy enough to post a pic. It is not all the time, completely at random on iPad. I've not be able to work out the trigger but it does make the site unusable when it happens. Right now just standard RH banner and headers and footer.

There's lots I could say to lots that's been said, but it won't placate the ones who think there's too many ads and that's not changing. So I decided to fix the misfiring Hargroves ad that was breaking the site template instead.

Does STW employ a tea person perchance? A jolly one? Who serves crisps and tea? And takes PayPal? I bet her fees are sky high.

I dont think there are too many ads just dont like them screwing up the screen as chip and Trout demonstrated.

ITV on our telly and Spotify completely stop on a regular basis to run ads.
As a subscriber, I get none on here.

The excuse I have heard for the ads is that they are needed to pay for the site.

You are aware they have to pay for hosting and that most of the STW side bandwidth is for this forum, right?

That said, when I log out, the ads ARE pretty intrusive.

Does the site earn from click throughs on ads?
How much?
If everyone clicked through on say 5 ads/day (based on daily average users), just how much would that improve the STW coffers?

It might decrease the coffers due to the ad network detecting "false" clicks i.e. deliberate attempts to generate revenue via ad clicks. Google certainly withhold ad payments when this occurs.

Best to click only if you're genuinely interested.
