An MP has become the first sitting politician to be jailed for 30 years after she lied to police when she was issued with a speeding ticket.

I know she did wrong n all, but 30 years seems excessive.

Agreed - did she ever use her race in her defence?

Damn that sentence, it means she’s still an MP and refuses to represent the people of Peterboghorror.

Everytime we get a labour MP, they turn out crap.

Then a conservative gets in for years yet it’s poor town lol.

Same old 5hit. I hate living here.

Is it just bad punctuation and she actually got three months?
As it says below that paragraph?
30 years seems excessive so it could be the first active MP in 30 years to get jailed.

"The first sitting politician for 30 years to be jailed" it says. Then below: "She has been jailed for three months after a re-trial at the Old Bailey."

Is that hard to understand?

....and yes it probably is because she and her brother are black. If she was a white, middle-aged, middle-class man she would have had a pal in the Masons have a word with the chief constable.

There was no evidence she was in a race. She was probably just in a hurry.

It is a lot clearer now they have changed the wording, before it said "The first sitting politician to be jailed for 30 years"
I guess the proof reader had some coffee and spotted the confusing sentence.

Oh I see. I didn't see that the sentences per se where inappropriate. But yes, she's a victim of Britains unspoken class system on that front.

She's a victim of Britain's unspoken class system only in thinking that the laws only applied to little people like us, but not to politicians like her. She appears to be rather a nasty piece of work but don't think colour is a factor in that - more just that she's a typical New Labour champagne socialist hypocrite perhaps.

Thought it sounded a bit familiar

My quote was verbatim. They’ve ninja edited it. Thought, I wasn’t being entirely serious.

...got eight months like Chris Huhne did in very similar circumstances?

EDIT: Huhne pleaded guilty too, which normally gets some discount on the sentencing. Onasanya was convicted at trial after a not guilty plea.

“Nissan Micra”

*s****s

Not because it’s an old car, or a car normal people use, but because it isn’t a Hybrid or other Greenwash Type vehicle so loved by Champagne Socialists.

You’d think with that vast “over the living wage” salary she’s been receiving that she’d choose to drive such a car.

If she was a Conservative MP, she’d have a Evoque or RRSport or Jaaaag on some sort of backhander PCP deal.

Sorry guys. I ****ed up.
I still hate her and her false excuses for her actions BUT she didn't use racism as a reason for any of her subsequent troubles.
The worst she did was claim: "I am in good biblical company along with Joseph, Moses, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends who were each found guilty by the courts of their day...This is equally true of Christ who was accused and convicted by the courts of his day."
So apologies to all for my error and can the mods change the thread title to "My imaginary friend made me do it."

Politicians and public figures just can't seem to grasp that they are going to be under greater scrutiny. Mere mortals like us might just have got away with giving the name of their absent Russian lodger.

Her other problem will have been that Onasanya is a Nigerian name and automatically that's going to arouse suspicion - no idea why.

If she was a Tory the outcome would of been different.

Eh? I don’t get why she got 3 months and her brother got 10 months!? She committed the driving offence and was equally culpable in the ensuing fraud. Logic says she should get the longer sentence, what gives?

You can read the judge's reasoning in full. In essence he deliberately mislead the Police, was for three convictions (5 months each) and had a bad record, she was previously clean and a bit distracted.

Judge's remarks in full

No it wouldnt, 2 Tories immediately spring to mind, Jeffry Archer and Jonathan Aitken.

Nope. Never even seen the inside of a police station.

But having now read ajaj’s link I get why he was sentenced for longer. What I’m now questioning is how she managed to get elected and through the doors of parliament with such shonky family history! I get that her brother’s actions should not reflect on her career but she quickly demonstrated she’s as bent as him! Who vetted this candidate!?

As we all concede including the OP, colour and race has nothing to do with this. For some reason due to human nature there seems to be a huge propensity to think that once you've gained a position of power you are somehow immune from the laws and consequences that all the other little people have to abide by. I've seen it time and time again from senior directors in city firms, not to mention lawyers, judges and high ranking cops. Whether it is fraud, manipulating audits, breaking human rights laws, these people think they simply won't get caught - its amazing. Coming from an MP and a solicitor its incredible - just what was going through her head? Strangely, high ranking forces officers seem mainly immune from this or perhaps they are just better at covering up their own...

I suspect that, if you look at the stats, that all sections of society contain people who think they'll get away with it. It's just more newsworthy for MPs.

These forums aren't exactly devoid of those trying trying to get away with it.
