It occurred to me while talking to elderly parents that they really do (in an idle 'I've made my vote' fashion) wish so very much to 'restore' Britain to the 1950s only with less 'red-tape', less foreigners, less cyclists on the roads and more white English nurses in hospitsls.
Then it hit me!! - Remember that Spanish pensioner (Cecilia Giménez) who attempted to 'restore' that hundred year old fresco?
The 'Ecce Homo' fresco of Jesus? In the Church of Santuario de la Misericordia? In the small town of Borja, Spain back in 2012?
Like so many pensioners in Britain, she was upset at the 'state' of things , and wished so much with all of her heart to restore it. So she took a broad brush and obliterated the original painting by daubing her own naive version over the top.. See what can be achieved with no planning but absolute faith?
Like the notion of Brexit, it was at first a mystery and people considered the damage to be the work of vandals. But then the pensioner came forward and confessed that she was the one wot done it. She just wanted to 'put it back'.
The End?
Well no actually. The Independent reported:
“Why are people coming to see it if it is such a terrible work of art?” he added. “It’s a pilgrimage of sorts, driven by the media into a phenomenon. God works in mysterious ways. Your disaster could be my miracle.”This Christmas the new and improved 'Ecce Homo' is stamped on local lottery tickets, has been featured in a small film, and made the good-natured restorer into a local celebrity.
The fame of the painting has stabilised the economy in the town, which had seen 300 jobs vanish in the economic downturn gripping Spain.
So while a few dour and grumpy Brits fear that we are heading for yet more dismantling, disarray, division, disorder, demise and other alliterative ailments - Mrs Giménez has shown us that there is always that chance where goodwill or plain annoyance can reap the biggest rewards if you are brave enough to tear up the cause of your annoyance. This shows that a post-Brexit Britain could be like a naively restored 'Ecce Homo'? A super-soaraway, stabilising, success story!
Well I never.
