Jefferey Herlings is the top Mx rider currently, world champion, just spanked the top Americans and is blindingly fast.

He also like to tell tell you how good he is, labelling himself the fastest man on the planet.

This grinds my my gears or am I just being to British about it.

labelling himself the fastest man on the planet.

Well he’s wrong isn’t he?

Presumably that would be Andy Green?

Good question.

Being British, we aren't very good at it or tolerant of it. We're much more reserved - 'Oh, these things? They're just some medals I won when I was younger.'

The Americans and Aussies are far less reserved.

Personally, there's nothing wrong with being open / proud of achievements; the art is doing so in a way that is the right side of the line between that and being a show-off about it.

I studied it at a higher level and had more bikes nicked.

What's Mx?

See Repack Rider's intermittent threads on here and the response they get.

It's a very American thing, they like to tell everyone how they're the greatest. I'd prefer everyone else to be talking about how I'm the greatest, so I can look decently embarrassed about it.

Repack is a good example.

I don't think he particularly brags about what he and his mates did back in the day. He just tells the stories, yes does mention that he was one of the originals which is factually correct after all, and while the nature of some of the stories will inevitably be a bit 'me me me' I don't think he crosses the line.

If he was British though, he'd just hang about and wait for someone to say - hey you do know Charlie was one of the originals don't you? and then act all shy.

Muhammad Ali seemed to get away with it. It seems strange though in these more enlightened times, he probably wouldn't get away changing his name to Muhammad.

It's not bragging when you can walk the walk, but it is bragging when it's bullshit.

There's something about it that many Brits hate.

For whatever reason Ali got away with it (for me), and some others, I don't know how/why. I aways respected Shaun Palmer and NWA for example, but Repack-rider just doesn't cut it - perhaps because he's harping on about something that happened 40 years ago and nothing since.

I’d rather a bragger (who can walk the walk) to another falsely modest prick.

Never forget who said “I am the greatest”.

Charisma, without that crucial ingredient you’ll just come across as an arsehole when bragging. Sadly a lot of people are severely lacking in the charisma department

the art is doing so in a way that is the right side of the line between that and being a show-off about it.

James Hunt seemed to pull it off but perhaps if he did it today he may just be a c.... or maybe you can only pull off the bragging if you are flawed in another visible way...

If you really are that good you don’t need to brag... everyone else will do it for you

I don't know - those repack rider posts really make my teeth itch. It's not even if he has anything to contribute or participates in the forum most of the time.

Only thing he "contributes" is the quarterly threads he starts to tell us how he was / is the greatest all time human for something he did in his yoof. He gets his craved for attention from some fanbois who blow smoke up his arse. His cravings then satisfied, he pisses off for another 3 months till it's time for him to post the same bloody stuff all over again.

Depends if the braggard is trying to put someone/thing else down in doing so.

Or if the thing they are bragging about isn't actually that impressive.

Plenty of folk manage both at the same time

Repack annoys me with his "I invented mountainbiking" nonsense - when actually it developed over time in many place with many roots.

He had a large part in it yes - what he did was organised the first DH races and developed bikes for that. I was riding modified bikes offroad well before those days in Marin county asnd so were others - My dad for example invented 29er singlespeed cross country as he took his bike over black sail pass in the 50s = on a gnarmac drop bar bike at that.

Repack also clearly has alerts set up for any mention of his name - he appeared on Mlehworld once when I used a picture of his. I guess he is attempting to preserve his heritage / acheivements but he just comes over as a twerp to me

Ali was bragging but with a sense of humour, that makes the difference. Barry Sheen the same; not James the Shunt, whose sense of humour wasn't as advanced.

Britain is changing, at least where I am in the South East, where there are plenty of big-head charlies who brag about their motors, their houses, their holidays, it is pretty horrible to be around.

My dad went “tracking in the woods”. That’s what he called riding bikes with rod brakes down twisty tracks in the woods. He was’t the first, neither was repack rider or your dad.

I love it when people brag then get their arse kicked.

We had a kid on one of the wings in the prison I worked at who was of Irish travelling persuasion (he spoke like one, but that means little) & he was always banging on about how he was this boxing champion & that fighting champion & how he could knock anyone out he wanted. Until a little kid from Leeds got sick of him & knocked him cold with one bop. He stopped bragging after that.

when i played rugby, you soon learned not to brag. and also not to wear very bright boots.

everyone is good at something. some people need to be told, some people just know.

a quick goole of jeffrey and his land speed record attempts came up with this

Armed with the right rider, KTM 450 bikes can win races among any galloping dirt bikes. With a top speed of 123 mph, KTM's SX-F sits in a class few bikes can enter.

123 ****ing mph bwahahahaha that pretty much means any bastard with a transit van has probably gone faster

Sounds a bit like Trumplestiltskin, wish he’d do the same disappearing trick.

Gets on my nerves.

I used to go ‘dirt tracking’ in the woods on my BSA Star Rider, steel fram, 3-speed SA, 650A wheels with Avon CX knobbly tyres and MX-style ‘cow-horn’ steel bars. That would have been mid-60’s.

I'm very good at what i do, and am not ashamed to say so.

I have been known to rather 'big up' myself on occasion, especially when i have had a particularly good day and have been on sparkling form.

Luckily, i can often read reviews from people who have enjoyed my services that objectively confirm my awesomeness.

Unluckily, what i actually do for a living is almost completely inconsequential.

But at least we all have a larf.
