Eldest son has a new GoPro7 but his re-purposed business Dell laptop isn’t nearly man enough to easily work with the videos. My MS Surface is the most powerful device in the house but its an elderly Core m3 processor so really not much better.
He’s only 12 and wont be troubling Danny Mc anytime soon so he’s really only playing with it – its more about learning about film making and having some fun – I expect he’ll make videos of his RC car and him falling off his paddle board to send to family rather than awesome youtube edits.
With that in mind, would a new Ipad Air cut the mustard? That would at least be useful as a family device whereas if I build a desktop machine with some decent grunt it will likely sit idle for weeks at a time.
i know nothing about these things so any advice appreciated!
As always I would think it depends..
Whats the spec of the iPad Air and equally important, what settings on the GoPro as 4k at a high frame/second produces very big files which would fill a disc drive pretty quickly.
OTOH, iMovie works fine for editing though I appreciate others have editing software favourites.
“Yes” is the short answer. I regularly switch between an early iPad Pro and MacBook for editing up videos for work. My only gripe with the iPad is that it doesn’t handle external storage as smoothly as the newer iPads do. The pencil is a handy tool for lining up clips for trimming etc.
I use my iPad mini 5 for editing in the gopro app (whatever it's called at the minute). It handles 2K footage (from a hero 8) fine for my short (2mins?), terrible "edits".
great stuff thanks guys. please excuse further numpty questions - regarding storage, does he need enough space to download everything he might use for an "edit" it one hit or does the app use the GoPro as an external drive? or do i simply add an external drive with all his files on it? I guess trying to use our existing NAS would be frustratingly slow?
just weighing up if the extra £150 is worth it for the 256g model
Ummmmm I've always DL'd the files for the edit either from the GoPro onto the iPad, or from "the cloud" onto the iPad. I think that's the only way the GoPro software will let you do it, but I stand to be corrected. Having to DL the mother-files on the iPad was the main reason I went for the biggest hardrive version of the iPad mini.
Check out Lumafusion on iPad, massive step up over iMovie but still really easy & intuitive.
I have the the current IPAD pro and used it over the summer hols to edit our GoPro 7 footage with no problems. The new AIR is essentially a the IPAD pro with a better processor so it should be fine.
splendid - that's all the nudge i needed, i'll order one tonight.
I think the new iPad Air supports external storage in form of USB memory stick or hard drive. My slighter older iPad Pro supports this since iOS 14 was released.
So if budget is too tight to get internal storage you need you may be able to use an external storage through the USB port and suitable adaptor?
The new iPad Air has usb c so you can use external storage quite easily. Might be cheaper to buy an SSD than pay for Apple-priced storage
Like everyone above I have found an iPad really good for editing GoPro footage. I use Movavi for editing and putting clips together, fairly basic but easy to use and produces good results.
