but more importantly does it make a decent long sleeve baselayer, or do i have to admit that merino is expensive for a reason?

What are you using it for? I wouldnt want merino in water and doubt it would last long in BJJ.
Palm make some fairly decent ones for kayaking which have held up well.

Are bjj ones not more like compression tops?
