I'm surprised there's no thread yet. I don't know much about Irish politics but it seems there's a bit of a change under way at the moment. Could be fascinating over the next couple of years as regards NI and the UK.

I know absolutely nothing, to be honest I'm more interested in what happens in the north.
Brexit is beautifully ironic in almost certainly leading to a united Ireland.
Possibly one of its few benefits. (Only benefit?)
Only mentioning the B word as it is very relevant to the election and its meaning.
Definitely a significant jump in support for SF who based their campaign on crisis in health care and the housing market for homeless, renters and those trying to get on the property ladder. SF only put forward 32 candidates so would perhaps have been more interesting had they put forward a higher number. Exit polls last night had it 22.x FF, 22.x FG and 22.x SF.
Should be an interesting few weeks to see what kind of a coalition Gov. is formed.
FG based their election campaign on their performance in the Brexit debacle to date and the fact that they saw themselves as the right party to represent Ireland in the Brexit trade negotiations. Voters seems to have said we've had it up to our nads with Brexit and we're more concerned with local issues.

There are counties in the north of Ireland that aren’t in Northern Ireland. 😀
It’s probably worth paying attention to the Sinn Féin surge if NI interests you. Since the GFA, the two main parties in the republic (who are harder to separate on policy than Lab v Tory) have generally had to interfere less with NI - the island was kind of operating as one country in a way - lots of cross border agencies, people living and working on different sides of the border. NI citizens free to have citizenship of the republic and thus “identify” as being “Irish” rather than British, and plenty more stuff that enabled NI citizens to just get on with their lives normally.
Obvs, Brexit has set the cat amongst the pigeons somewhat. Now, how much this has influenced the SF surge, I couldn’t tell you. But I’m sure I read over the weekend that it was only in the over 65s that they didn’t poll higher than FF and FG. I’d imagine they’ll certainly be part of the next government and given their stance on Brexit and a UI...well...interesting times ahead.

They must be kicking themselves this evening do you think? I’d imagine they’d no idea of the surge in support when they put the candidates forward. But like you say, interesting few days ahead. I see Leo only got in on the fifth round! 😲
If SF had put forward more candidates it may of diluted their vote and led to less success, certainly in the first round counts where they have been so successful. I don’t know how the result will pan out but feel any sort of coalition will be tough to put together and may end up with another election sooner than later.
