I saw that. I like the thought of hipsters in Iraq. In fact I'd send them all there.
They look The Bomb.
I saw it too.
Very dapper indeed.
I thought it was an ad for Hebden trouser company at first .:-)
Saw that on the BBC app this morning. Good on them. 🙂 normal people trying to raise above the hate and BS just by doing something ordinary.
Fair play to them.
Love that! 🙂
That's brilliant 🙂
Have the Iraqis not suffered enough?
Fascinating article.
Reminds me of the Sapeurs .
That, I have to say is very, very cool.
Let's hope they treat the women in their lives with a bit of respect too...
I suspect female Iraqi hipsters would need to show their individuality underneath a long black head to tow covering.
As they are Kurds I doubt it.
Link to their FB page.
Cool as!

Perhaps you should get out and mingle a bit more. Your eyes might just get opened a bit.
I wonder whether you'd be offended with being slighted with typical scouce stereotyical views from the outside world? Eh? Eh? Eh?
Iraqi Hipsters, of course I knew it when it was called Mesopotamia.
I feel the need for a tweed suit. Love it!
Lots of blah blah about women's rights but not a woman quoted or pictured. Put your cameras and microphones in front of women not men if you want to fight sexism, BBC.

I feel the need, the need for tweed...Sorry.
A good story from a very troubled part of our world. Anything that can bring some normality to the area should be applauded. If you feel morally outraged in anyway pop your head out the front door. Not been shot in the head yet? Then rejoice and wish them the best.

Except... it's a gentleman's group. So. you know. It's men. From memory the BBC have done articles about Kurdish women fighters not that long ago. Individual articles like this don't reveal bias, except by people commenting on them.
Oh... and if you'd read the article fully:
Every Thursday, Mr Erbil writes a post on the "girl inspiration", in which they promote women working on behalf of the community. One of them is Dashni Morad, who gives workshops in leadership skills to women who survived the massacre and rape of members of northern Iraq's Yazidi sect by IS militants.
You need a ladder for the high horse?
Boys still looking sharp....

Loddrik and others
I've worked with a lot of Kurds, the women tend not to wear headscarves and they dress in a very western fashion. There is a reason why a lot of people hate them, because they aren't seen as "proper Muslims". There is a saying that goes "Compared to the unbeliever, the Kurd is a Muslim"."
Kurds are the good guys, if you visited Iraq, you'd feel pretty safe in Kurdish territory - womens rights won't come over night, it takes the time and effort of groups like this to enact change.
Mr Erbil sees itself as something almost akin to a movement representing young Iraqi Kurds who are looking for a better life and want to promote Kurdish culture to the world.
The group even hopes to effect social change and challenge traditional attitudes, particularly on women's rights.
The west has failed by not wholeheartedly supporting the Kurds in the face of Turkish, Iraqi and Iranian aggression. They could be our best allies in the apocalypticly stupid ****ery that is going on in the middle east.
